You have to be looking at the target and then you snap a photo. I think it's on your quick reference card. At first, I thought you could take pictures of anything, like video capture on modern subs, but it's only if your looking at the target.
I hope this helps, sorry I can't be much more informative.

yea well, live in Canada and we didnt get any of the bonus material we were suppose to have so i dont have the quick reference card

Could someone be kind enough to scan their 'quick reference card' and upload it?

I'll try it again, if i cant get it to work ill go back to base and tell sub command that i forgot the batteries for the camera

But it has to be a special kind of target.

I have been playing with this. YOu can lock up allied or Japanese ship (using the lock) and the photograph button will not illuminate.

So the steps as I see them are:

1) Find the valid (however this is defined) target.
2) Observe the valid target through either scope.
3) Lock the target with the scope.
4) Press the Photobutton (which should have been illuminated?)

That's strange. I haven't yet come across a photobug mission, so what I'm telling you is only what I've read.
Also, I think that somewhere in your game files there is a file that has the quick reference card. That's utter bull-stuff that you guys didn't get the bonus material. I'm not at my apt., sorry I cant be much more of a help. Did you guys get the manual? It's doesnt really help much with Crew Management and othere stations, but does a good job in explaining TDC, but you can find better material here at subsim.
Maybe look under the start menu and find SH4 and then look if there is any material. I found that I dont look at the card at all. Some things were missing, like the sonar rotate keys. (Home and End)
Try using F1 key to look up the info, but I doubt that'll help.

I still can't take photos.
I've locked and tried both periscopes and the camera button is still greyed out.
And i have the quick ref card and don't see anything that helps or conrols the camera.

Not every ship in or near the harbor can by photographed. Try a different ship.

If your un carreer mode try targeting different ships, I had to take photos of freighters... sometimes you need photos of many different ships in harbour, i needed two that time.

If you did a single mission you maybe just forgot a parameter or something, many things might not work as plan using it just because your missing something.

hope this helps, not that i know much about it.
