Default Thermal Layers!!!

Hey guys I was on a patrol and dived to test out my boat and when I passed the 100ft mark my sonar man told me we were passing a thermal layer!

Yep, noticed that too. Now we just need to find out if there really is thermal layers or is the sonar man´s report just for the immersion.

Wait, so your SO actually talked to you? Did he use his words or did he just telepathically beam that knowledge into your cranium?

Yes it's in the game. You just hear a voice that says: "passing thermal layer!" (whispering shout)

Happens at different depths. I have never dived below 50 m..

I dived down to about 115m before imploding with a P class in the final training mission (convoy attack).

I most definitely got the "Passing Thermal Layer" voice every time I went past approximately 51m in that mission. Going both ways.

I could be wrong, but it seems like after going under the layer, I could no longer pick up the ships furthest away from me.

Cool. Anyone have any real life data of the effectiveness of Thermal Layers in reducing the acoustic profile?

That's been brought up in the Dangerous Waters/ Sub Command forums so much, I don't have the time to hunt them down. I'm busy hunting Japs.

You might do a search on "Thermocline" in DW & SC forums. There was always a number of sonar related links on the science of it.

If you're too lazy, just estimate it'll cut your (and your enemy's) sonar range in almost half if you're under it.

Nice! It will be interesting to play test this later on and see if the thermal layer is really there and affects DDs hunting you down...or if it's just empty candy.

O'kane claimed that the thermal layer plus a more modern prop design made Tang undetectable at pretty much any speed.
