Well first things first, Radar was very new at the time and still had alot of problems. But we shouldnt worry about that now.

Assign a crew member to the Radar/Radio post, click the little image of the Radar operator and tell him to sweep once or sweep continuesly (best choice) or you can tell him to shut off the radar. Remember when you resurface you MUST turn on the Radar. Everytime you dive it shuts off.

I love radar, it scans the area around your boat and picks up any targets. Its great.

O and one more thing, if the weather is bad and the sea is stormy then the radar wont work. But a trick i use is then its real stormy out i keep clicking the continuous sweep button, so that it "never" shuts off.

REMEMBER!!!....every time you use your radar, there is a good chance the bad boys will detect it and you!!!

I figure that if I'm running a radar signal detector, so are the bad guys.. I'd rather rely on my hydrophones and lookouts..

Good Luck..

Like Herr Russ said, the enemy can detect your radar-signals just as easy as you can detect theirs....(that is, if you have the Radar Warning Receiver installed).
In SH3, radar is switched ON by default upon game-loading.
So if you saved in dangerous waters, then better put radar to OFF immeadiatly after the game has loaded.
Best way is to right-click on the radio-guy, and switch it OFF yourself.
If an enemy is near, then just a couple of seconds of radar-activity is enough to alert him.

Which makes it clear that the RWR is a must - certainly if you are equipped with radar yourself.
Btw, if I had to choose between radar or RWR, I'd pick the RWR anytime.

Hydrophones are much safer

Very true. However, when I am far out into the Atlantic, I tend to use it. Here is why:

In the game, it seems to detect planes at a greater distance then the Metox does. That gives me enough time to dive, if necessary. I figure that a plane out that far has radar *ANYWAY*, so whether I am radiating or not is irrelevent:

Either he detects my radar, or he detects me on his radar.

At least when I am using my radar (and I am talking the FuMO-30 here. The FuMO-29 is pretty much worthless in this respect), I have a much greater detection range, and a better chance to get in the cellar before the eggs start dropping.

Now, I wouldn't dream of doing this around around the British Isles, but I have done it when travelling through the Bay of Biscay, especially once the depth under keel is at least 100 meters. The problem with doing it there is it brings multiple planes after you.

I find the radar I have (FuMo-29) pretty much worthless, and I can't remember ever having used it.
Maybe I'll even remove it before next patrol, so that I don't have to disable it after game-loading.
My life-savers are the RWR, my watch-crew, and running decks-awash.

With RWR but no radar installed, you eliminate that chance, and keep full initiative yourself.

The only time I can think of a good use for radar, is during foggy conditions.
But I like to rely on the hydrophone instead, on those occasions...much less nasty surprises that way.

Think about that in relation to what I said: By 1943, all of the long range aircraft are going to have radar anyway. There is also a significant amount of time where the Allies are using centimetric radar, which Metox can't detect, and the Naxos isn't available.

Thing is, if you have an RWR, all it basically does is tell you that there is a radar in the area. Chances are, you've been spotted (at least, in the stock game. I haven't downloaded GWX yet).

Using the FuMO-30 (which scans 360 degrees), you can detect those aircraft from farther away. He is either going to see you on his radar, or he is going to detect your radar. Either way the result is the same: You're gonna get attacked. The difference between the two is that you get more warning time with the FuMO-30 then you get with either the lookouts or the Metox.

My standard procedure is to dive to periscope depth on detection of a radar target. I then listen on hydrophones and try to hear if there is anything in the direction of the radar contact. If there isn't anything, I assume it was an aircraft and stay under for a while. If I hear something on the 'phones, depending on target speed, distance, etc., I may approach submerged or surfaced, whichever is appropriate.
