Hello,
I need help ... I just lost a good friend yesterday my old 100gb Maxtor 72k hard drive, but I had backed up to a USB portable, all my data is okay. Installed another old sata white label 120gb hdd last night and I was able to get back up and running, but all I can do is get online. If I try to do anything else the computer will freeze, crash or reboot ... usually just freeze with a blank desktop and no icons. So I reboot and sit here wondering what to do. Computer won't let me defrag ... says I have to run check disk first ... Computer tries to run chk dsk on start up and says: Checking file system NTFS 1 out of 5 completes first one and stops checking on the 2nd one. reboot push esc to by pass chk dsk and everything okay to get online, but that is all ... Tried to install ad aware, but won't install freezes or get error message When I am online I get pop up ads for registry warning.com's at lest 6 different dot com's with the same M.O. I know I can fix this payday in 11 more days, but what can I do now ... thank you kindly

best thing is to reformat and reinstall windows. sounds like corrupt install of windows, make sure the cd is clean and dirt or fingerprint free

That was my option for new hard drive payday ... I had to call in this one to some guy in India that works for MS to revaladate Windows XP, because I had changed the video card and sound card.

A freeze with a blank desktop usually means that Explorer crashed. One option you should try it to put your XP CD in and do a 'repair' install. That might fix the corrupted files for you. A clean install usually is the best method though. -S |
