Enjoying this sim...!

Hello Forum Members:

Enjoying my time with GWX. I've stayed away from shallow seas and only used TC1024 sparingly...(see "surprise collisions with unmarked land)

Since that posting I've gone on 2 patrols, the last one ending with Bernard opening the drain, and the rest of us heading to Canada as POWS...

2 patrols, 4 ships sunk. Both patrols were to BE 61.

Great moments: torpedoing a passenger/cargo (?) outlined against flashes of lightning and thunder just east of Rockall.

Running into a convoy in BE61 at night. Bernard is yelling "Ship spotted" but never tells me the direction. I search the horizon with my Binocs and Uzo and still don't see anything. Meanwhile Bernard is yelling "Ship spotted" repeatedly. I think he's having a fit...

Finally, out of the gloom emerges an ore carrier, the Rodney, and lots of merchants. I approach on the surface, at high speed, undetected. I launch 2 torpedoes at the ore carrier, go to periscope depth and turn towards the Rodney. "Boom", "Boom"
both torpedoes impact, the ore carrier goes dead in the water. I'm looking for the Rodney but she's disappeared. Merchants loom out of the darkness. I fire one more torpedo at the ore carrier and it connects. I launch 1 more torpedo at a merchant crossing my bow at 600 metres. The AOB is too severe and it bounces. I turn quickly to line up my stern tube. I make the turn and fire but again the torpedo bounces. The sky is lit with flares.

Bernard drops his wrench. He picks it up and drops it again. 'We've been detected sir'.

I gun the engines, make a hard turn to starboard and dive. We escape, momentarily. I cut the engine, meanwhile exhorting the crew to load new torpedoes. We sit motionless and watch as the the first tube is loaded.

The destroyer makes another pass. We are pinged. I dive again, this time using silent running.

DCs explode, damaging the boat. We sink out of control. I order 'blow ballast'. Nothing, we are still sinking. 'Blow ballast' again! The boat slowly comes around at 164 metres.

We are rising, out of control, to the surface. As we crash through periscope depth I take a chance and try to aim for the escort, if it's in front of us. No luck. The bow surfaces and we are lost due to flooding.

In SH3 Commander I change crew 'lost at sea' to crew 'surrendered' since we had just broken through to the surface before the boat was lost. Time for a trip to Gravenhurst, or Bowmanville (both sites in Canada of POW camps for submariners)

Great immersion! Lots of tension.
Bernard though...he's not so great!
