OK, it's February 1942. Operation Drumbeat is being cranked up. I'm assigned to Lorient with a VIIB. I look at my new mission and it's to CA73. WTF? The VIIB doesn't have the fuel to get there and back. At slow speed on the surface I can get there and about half way back. I check the scheduled location of the milk cows and there won't be one availbale to me until mid April. Am I supposed to drift until then? Is this punishment for cursing all those damn Irish convoys running all over BF15 & 16 with their lights all ablaze? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just ignore the mission and just cruise around looking for targets and return when I'm low on fuel, eels or both? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Commission a type 9 uboat, or transfer the 1st, 7th, 11th, or 29th flotilla.
If your in lorient, that means your in the 2nd or 10th flotilla, those are long range flotillas, and you'll be sent out, repeatidly, to remote grid assignments. US east coast, carribean, and south atlantic. |

Get the new SH3 Commander and change the the patrol area
![]() That sounds to simple must be something wrong with that answer. :rotfl: I change my next patro area to AN 26. My home base is Wihelmshaven ready for Patrol 3 Nov, 28, 1939. Thinking about a vist to that Nuetral Port in Norway Kristiansand to find and destroy the Armed Trawler that Attacked my boat on surface and killed my chief Petty officer. He just about wiped me out on a surface attack. Luckey to get away. PS "See my Post Nuetral Ports" Eric Kolb U-53 V11B ![]() |

Just shoot at anything that floats or flys. Good practice for SH-4 :p

Yeah, you need a IX boat. Check the F1 key and see if a milch cow is available along the way. Use that if you are stuck with the VII. It will be tough with the VII. Heck, even the IX only had about 2 weeks of operational fuel when they arrived. Then they had to go home on what fuel they calculated would be used to make it home

Is there real life accounts of uboats running out of fuel and what did the captains do when it happened?

Perhaps ran out of fuel if a bunker was breached. I have not read about any of this happening. I have not read of any just plain running out because the engineer was not watching it. All the men knew that they had to depend on each other and all men at their post needed to be vigilant. You would be a real Bernard if the fuel was allowed to run dry:rotfl::rotfl:

Thanks AVG - yeah it makes sense that they would not have gone to an area that they couldn't get back from. Would they have been given an order like the one mentioned? I doubt it.
Oh and my VII is better than you IX :P |
