Default Radio Traffic in SH4

I have read several SH4 previews the last couple of days and besides a general dev-team statement (there will be a lot more radio traffic than in SH3) I did not read anything concerning radio trafic. I mean military/naval radio trafic and not stuff like Radio Tokyo, Radio Hawaii, and news broadcasts.

Of course non military broadcasts sound (no pun intended) realy promising, but does any one knows if military radio traffic will realy be more dense than SHIII

PS: Be more agressive!

Well I just hope that all this extra radio traffic wil be more than just something to hear or read. If it doesn't equate to actual gameplay assistance then it might not be anything more than a nuisance.

To me, it's all about the immersion. (pun) I hope we can tune in Tokyo Rose! And news broadcasts? In the first Gulf war, listening to the BBC News on short wave radio was one of the major activities in down time. There was no email, sat phones, etc... Mail was from 2 months ago, the radio was your only source of up to date news. Same in WWII. Soldiers and sailors who are bored, far from home maybe for the first time, and isolated on a small vessel for a long time would give their right arm for news from the outside world. And music? Gotta have some period music - Glenn Miller, Big Band stuff, etc... And I hope that we will receive patrol orders from time to time for special missions, change of plans, etc... over the radio. And we should be on radio silence sometimes too. Transmitting when you're not supposed to should be penalized by lots of ASW ships and aircraft showing up and kicking your butt, or a nasty letter/radio transmission from your CO/ loss of renown, whatever. Should result in damage to your reputation/career if you're lucky, damage to your boat if you're not.

is this what your after Dreb?

Posted in the Dev's Answers by AudibleKnight on the 9th of march:

Q: Godzero: When you get close to a Port (like Tokyo) will you be able to tune in and here enemy propaganda on your radio? (like "Tokyo Rose")
A: The game implements a full radio simulation that is very moddable. The game will be able to tune into differente frequencies, by using the radio. Also there is an antenna simmulation. Each radio in the game will have (except for it's own frequency and music folder) a configuration file that will explain exactly where (on the globe) and when (the time period) its antennas were available. Depending the state of the war some japanese antennas might go out of service, wile the Radio Washington ones migh appear instead. Also there is provided a strength for each antenna. Antennas placed on japanese mainland can be stronger than ones placed on remote islands. Taking this into account (also, the depth of the sub adds modifiers to the strength of the received signal) the player will be able to have a veri close to reality simulation of the entire radio traffic. Each radio station has its own music folder and also for each radio station news can be added. They will be played at specified periods of time, specified in configuration files. A modder could actually, for example, record two news (one for radio Washington, one different for radio Tokyo) about the allies landing in Normandy and have one on Radio Washington 10 minutes after the landing began, while radio Tokyo might receive this news 30 minutes later and have the other recorded news played then.

if you'ed like to see the other Q&A's then here's a like to the last page:

This approach will open up all sorts of possibilities to enhance the immersion factor.

Thanks FF. But I am after military traffic like messages from naval/sub command. Messages to/from other subs. Allied as well as Axis. Orders where/when to enter port. tactical orders. Mission changes. MAYDAY calls. Radio traffic from airplanes, etc etc

of course I hope my radio dude will also pick up messages he can not decipher at all.

PS: That Q&A thread is really interesting I complety read it a couple of days ago and will certainly read it again
