Default Conning Tower?

I have seen views of the control room but I see that the conning tower is also in the sim but have seen no views yet.I was wondering if any have been previewed yet and if so where?

Thank you for those screenshots but can I ask a stupid question?I have been on 5 different fleet boats from the Bowfin in Pearl to the Torsk in Baltimore and have many different books and I can not find a picture of a conning tower with a WTD in the tower just the hatch to the control room and the hatch to the bridge.I want to ask am I missing something? There are some boats that have a hatch from the foward area of the bridge to the foward gun platform but that is a open area not part of the conning tower.

Jeff is absolutely right, and until now i never gave it a second thought. Going back and remembering the USS COD walk-around. there is no second WTD in the face of the tower. Only the vertical access hatch to the bridge. (Looking at the 1st pic in thread.)

Saying that, there were two main manufacturers building US fleet boats, and there were distinct design differences, and we do not actually "Know" which sub the pics are modelled from.

The top picture is taken from this site: http://www.marinesims.de/site/silent...-4/sh4-34.html. I guess it's a shot of a Porpoise class conning tower, not a Gato or Balao.

The only real question I have with some of the conning tower and control room screens shots was I thought the helm was in the conning tower?

You are correct. However! The main steering was in the conning tower. The emergency helm is located in the control room below.

That's what I thought too. The screenshots and videos that I've seen, they have the helm manned down in the control room. :hmm:

If you guys are referring to the Water Tight Door that 'should' be in the conning tower...

On most boats (if not all) these we removed either during or just after the war. I think (have to ask the curator) that Cod had one in the aft of the conning tower going to the 'dog house' (the small enclosure just after the Conning Tower). This one was removed (if it ever was there) during the war. If I find more details I'll let you know.

groetjes,

Can I ask a question by tagging it on to jeffg's?

How did they get amunition to the 3" or 5" gun ...?

Perhaps that big round thing I see on the fwd part of the sail at deck level?

Plus is the amunition depth proof?

One last question did the firing of the deck gun leave a shell case behind?

Just wondering while waiting ... :p
