Multithreading and SH4

Well it's official: SH4 supports multithreading -- sort of.

/sigh (had to get that off my chest)

According to the Daily Dev Answer over at Ubi's forums:

A: There are separate threads for minor tasks in the game, so there will be SOME improvement in running a multiprocessor machine.
Not exactly the thundering news I was hoping to read on this front, but I suppose "some improvement" is better than status quo.

Agreed.

It's a move in the right direction.

Well in fairness, SH4 isn't multithreaded either (in the true sense of the term). SH4's code would require significant re-engineering to implement multithreading correctly, and that just likely wasn't in the cards with the accelerated development schedule this time around. Perhaps down the road some future version of SHx may be multithreaded.

Although I wouldn't call that a small victory, you could consider the game being released next month a victory. Had SH4 been redesigned as a multithreaded game, I suspect we'd all be waiting much longer for a launch.
