http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/6380933.stm

Almost half of Britains troops in Iraq may be home by Christmas.

Be nice if it happens and there isnt chaos left in their wake! Be very bloody nice!

I dunno how likely it is that they're returned home, nor how likely it is that if they're returned home the areas they were responsible for remain peaceful enough..

time shall tell!

Maybe ... ABC evening news said UK was going to withdraw half of their troops from Iraq, true ... but they also said the UK was going to increse their troop levels in Afgahistan ... balancing act for Tony.

It'd be nice, but I'm not holding my breath, like geetrue said, they'll probably be out to Afghanistan by Boxing day, either that or if things kick off in Iran, then the knock on effects in Iraq will have our boys there until next year.

Still, let's keep our fingers crossed, eh?

Only a matter of time.

The US seems to be the only nation willing to see the war on Islamic Fundies through, and that's quite contested. I might mention Israel, but they seem to wanna be left well alone for some time now.

In the end, we shouldn't expect another country to help defend our interests. Even if they seem to have some of the same hatred directed at them.

At least the Aussies have always been stalwart in their support. But who knows where that'll go.
That's my reply to this news.

If you want to express your opinions on a board with few rules, and even less Admin persecution than your normal message board, come give these guys your opinions no matter what they be. (Shameless Plug for my fav). Air it all out. Learn the few rules as you go. It's very forgiving.

Just don't go whining when any discussion gets heated. Good luck with that.

If it's come out of Tony B-liar's mouth, I'll believe it when I see it happen.

Love your sig there! (i can only say so cos the lady friend is in bed with a migraine!) Im glad to see theres a few people who see the full potential of this whole islam against the rest thing at those boards, its refreshing to see in a largely liberal world.

anyways, like i said before, if it happens awesome, if not well hey, i dont think many people will be surprised. As for the UK sending more troops to afghanistan, well hell you know, i read a report today in a left-leaning newspaper that they're nearly there! just need to get onto the final straight! and thats GOOD NEWS! i think it makes sense to give the extra support there, where they are so close!

And what will the next Labour Prime Minister will do (That is if Tony Blair has stepped down by then) say about Oct/Nov the violences suddenly escalates? Which would not be a surprise if it did, more so in the British controlled areas.

Hmm. I've always been given to thinking that 'home by Xmas' was a euphemism for we've let this lot get off the hook and we'll be here forever thank you so much human rights lawyers.

It's more a political popularity move done time and time again, it's now an overused cliche. "Back in time for christmas" plays on the hearts of the people back home and creates warm ans fuzzy feelings.

I do not believe a word what Tony Blair has said over the years he has screwed the people of the UK and on the world stage he comes across as a real darling, yuck.

As opposed to what? The order and civility that reigns at present?

Well, they pulled out of Southern Iraq. How many suicide bombings and killings have you heard coming from there?

Looks a whole lot more peaceful than the "Sunni Triangle."

There will probably be no chaos if the US troops stay while UK withdraws, but if all foreign forces withdraw, then watch the fireworks fly.
