Default Radar

Does anyone have any pictures of the radar screen they will be using in sh4? Does anyone know which types of radar they included? SJ and SD im sure of but what about sv? How good were the japanese radar detectors and what year did the come out? Was it common practice on US subs to use the radar as a rangefinder during during an attack run?

I haven't seen any pictures of radar screens but I would assume (which gets me into trouble) that early radar will use an A-Scope and by mid-war they will have PPI scopes.

The most common radars for fleet subs were SD (aircraft warning which gave no bearing) SG and SJ. Not sure SV was available...

Yes--Radar was commonly used to confirm ranges during an attack, especially under poor visibility conditions.

That's what I'd expect too

Did I see that correctly: The radar is turning counter- clockwise?

For the most part Japanese ships didn't start receiving radar detectors until 1944.

You're right and I won't buy SH4 if radar won't turn clockwise!:rotfl:

It didn't do a full sweep, and it stopped when he turned to talk to his audience. I'm guessing (hoping) that he had it set to move manually and just ran it that way before stopping. They could be stopped and turned by hand-I think.

I believe Germans equipped Japanese subs that made it to the French bases with German radars (but last I recall, they actually never made it back to Japan); otherwise I'm sure the Germans sent blueprints for some of this technology as well. Don't think there's much beyond that, it's not like there was a very stable/safe trade between them :hmm:

Speaking of borrowing from the Germans, at one point the Japanese contracted to acquire examples of the Pzkw V Panther and Pzkw VI Tiger tanks. However, it is not 100% certain that either type of tank was disassembled in preparation for submarine shipment to Japan but the intent was certainly there.

The Germans did outfit japanese subs with radar detectors before they made the run for france. I think one Japanese sub did make it back (have to check that).
The Germans sent examples of radar to the japanese when they sent there subs over to vist and to be based there.
