Default Fractional target speeds?

Hi,

Oftentimes when using the 3:15 manual targeting method I don't get whole numbers for a target's speed (e.g. 7.5 kts). Do ships actually travel at these exact speeds in the game (GWX), or should I assume that my measurement is off, and thus I should round the number up or down?

Thanks

I am not 100% sure but I think there is an experimental error in your calculation. As a rule of thumb I would round up whatever is above 0.5 and down whatever is below 0.5. Another think you can do is to try to do the measurement a few more times. That will give you better statistics so you will know more accuratelly the speed of your target.

On average I find the targets are making 7kts. I would round down to the nearest whole number.

In real life and in the game ships do travel at 7.5, 9.5 ect. That half a knot makes a big difference when you are crossing the Atlantic!

Anyway...why round off at all? Just set the targets speed in the computer at 7.5, 9.5, ect.

Do you think that .5 at a certain distance the target will be missed by the torpedo? :hmm:

Depends on the range you fire at I suppose
A ship travelling at 7.5 will be in a different place to a ship travelling 7
Close up it wont matter a great deal but from 3/4 km it would

And yes there are entries in the campaign for ships using half knots from 6.5 all the way up to 14.5

It really depends on the distance and the part of the ship you're trying to hit. If you're close you're OK but if you fire from larger distances (> 1500-2000m) then it can actually make a difference. Also if you aim at the aft part of the boat there is a chance you miss it.

If your within 800 meters or so then just round to the nearest whole number otherwise select the speed rotor as close to the speed as possable, would be nice to see dial scale changed but then it wouldn't be realistic!!

I think ships can travel at fractional speeds. Use the weapon officer to plot a torpedo attack - the speed he chooses is often between whole numbers. I do the 3.15 rule and I go with the number I calculate (sum of four readings /4) as the best estimate of target speed. I think convoys have a whole number target setting (e.g. 7kts) but they can fail to achieve that speed as a function of the weather.
