Default Maybe some ideas for Sub upgrades?

This comes from http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/gato-class.html

Some good ideas from actual wartime modifications.

Wartime Modifications

Conning tower cut down to reduce silhouette

forward AA gun platform added

progressively heavier deck gun fitted

enhanced sonar and radar

bathythermograph(detecting thermal layers)

LORAN(Long Range navigation radar)

LORAN is actually LOng RAnge Navigation. It does not use radar, but rather pulsed radio transmissions.

I would like to see quad 40's front and rear of conning tower. Two 5"/25s aft and forward and a nice chair bolted toward the stern so I can do some deep sea fishing.

The deck guns did not become progressively heavier. The big three had twin 6" guns, the 'S' class had 4", and all the others carried 5" guns.

The option of having two guns late in the war is one that really should cost a LOT of renown, if they still use that system. Only a few boats got them, and only if the captain had a lot of sway.

It's been a looooooooong time since I played SH1 but didn't the Balao or the Tench class (don't know if the latter was available) automatically come with 2 guns? I always thought that it was one of the improvements ove the Gato class.

I've always been curious about who made the decision as to where the main deck gun got placed. On some boats it's forward of the conning tower. On others, it's aft. Skipper preference?

In June 1945 the submarine Barb was fitted with an experimental 5-inch rocket launcher. In the closing weeks of the war it was used to conduct a rocket bombardment of the town of Shikuka on Sakhalin Island, setting fires, and destroying three sampans at dockside. Not quite like U-Boats armed with V-2s, but it might be a fun mod.

Oh yeah!

Now if they only included the Narwhal, I could have 2 quad 40's mounted fore and aft of the conning tower, two 6 inch guns on the fore and aft gun deck and two rocekt launchers on the fore and aft main deck! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Throw in 4 GM 16-258 re-engined V-16 diesels rated at 2,000 BHP (actualy installed in 1942) and I am ready to rumble!

Maybe they could install a plank too!

You love them six-inchers don't you? :p

There was a plan proposed in the summer of 1942 to have the Nautilus use her two fine six-inch guns to pound the Japanese summer palace at Hayama on the east coast on Honshu. There was a possibility that Emperor Hirohito might have been in residence there, and it would have been quite a coup to knock his summer retreat down around his ears with him in it. However, Commander Bill Brockman nixed the idea when he studied the area and saw how shallow and teeming with reefs the waters were. Too bad we'll never find out if it could have been possible in SH4.

I've been playing SHI again just to get into the "swing" of things again and have a Balao sub with only one deck gun. If I remember - some time in early '45 you were given a second deck gun:hmm:

I know the USS Silversides (Gato class) only had one deck gun, but it was moved forward of and then aft of the Conning Tower structure on a few occassions????? Do not know if that was skipper preference or just part of the re-fit. Other than occassional use - I don't think they were used that often anyway.

Happy Hunting

Im surprised no one has suggested a pink paint job or fluffy dice hanging above the map table Perhaps a dancing hoola girl on the dash would be more apropriate.

What did american boats have for music, apart from the radio, did they have a Tape deck instead of gramaphone ?

People have discussed pink submarines many times, and pink u-boats have been modded for SHIII.

I think US boats had a record player, which is the usual American term. Believe it or not, the first tape recorder was made by the Germans in the 1920s, but wasn't perfected for commercial use until 1947:
