The map1 and map2 folders hold large world map files in 'raw' format (8 bit colour - which is determined by the game palette - we have no control over)
Depending on what you want to do... It's a big mission to do anything with the maps.

As you zoom in close, in game, there are other 'map' files which give more detailed coastline info - I'm not sure how it is formatted though.

Yes you can edit it, but look at all the shades used. Play with it for a while, before commiting any final edits.

It is possible to incorporate maps into the game, or there is information of the game that we don't know still?

From what I've experienced.. the maps are loaded when you start the game, so there's probably little or no chance of bringing in map alternatives or map updates.

Are you thinking of campaign controller, where you can jump to any UBoat ??

Also the zoom-far map is only 9MB which should present no speed problem but the zoom-close map is a whopping ~227MB which would present a big time delay in loading!

Another thing is that your map would have to be 'nearly' the same wrt to shorelines, geography as the original. You can replace the original, but make sure your dimensions are the same as the original. This is important as the game uses distance scales that are implicit to the pixels in the map - map dimensions.

Anyone experience with this?

As far as I can see, the map is purely 2D. The altitudes must be buried elsewhere!

Let me know is you find this stuff
