Default SH3.exe infected?

Now I have a whole new problem. When I try to run SH3, the protection system pops up and tells me the sh3.exe file has been changed, it may be damaged or infected with a virus.

I've run my anti-virus program various times, no change. I've reinstalled it, no change.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

It shouldn contain anything bad, unless you have obtained SHIII from other places than those recommended. Some virus programs hate .exe files, btw..
Have you tried to run SHIII?

I have the DVD version. It's been running for over a year with no problems. Now, all at once, for no apparent reason, this happens. And I have the patch for it also.

If you have used this from the same DVD for a year, there should be no problems with it. If you also have downloaded the 1.4 patch from ubisoft, there shouldn be a problem there either. And if you use GWX: It isnt infected, trust me. I think it might be that your virus program has a hickup...What antivirus-program are you using?

I agree with Seth. The chance that a virus would go for SH3.exe are slim to none. Hackers aim for bigger game. As a computer tech by trade, you've caught my interest and I'd also like to know what anti-virus you're using.

There is also the possibility that you're a victim of a simple corrupted file... Does SH3 if you shut off your anti-virus?

Your Anti Virus software is trying to tell you something .....

You have a Virus ...

Virus' , are written to do all manner of things. Some of then sit resident in memory and then infects any .exe / .com file on the drive when it is loaded into memory. It spreads throughout for drive and then onwards. This is how some / lots virus' spread.

There is no such thing as a 100% safe antivirus software. To limit the risk, you must ensure that the virus detection tables are bang up todate and kept up todate by its auto updating feature. This still doesn't garrentee that your machine is safe. Some virus checker installations become "compramised", so they will let some resident stuff get through.

Corrupt files don't flag as virus'

What I suggest.

Unistall your anti virus, and reinstall it, This will catch most situations (although it depends how old and what make your AV software is), Secondly ,Go to you AV's website and download there boot scanning application for a better chance.

After you have cleared the virus, then you have to clean up the damage, SHIII seems to be one, but there will probably be others too. But don't fix SHIII and ignore the cause, because it'll come and bite you again.

First, I've got CA (Computer Associates AV system, through AT&T/SBCGlobal), and it's not telling me I have a virus. It's the Starforce system that says the file is damaged OR I have a virus.

Do you need to know more?

Seriously though.

A couple of things to try...

1.
Check to see if the date of the SHIII exe file is nice and old, not like last week of something. That would cut out questions about tampering.

2.
Perhaps your have a cluster problem with the drive, Do a Scandisk (in tools / properties of the drive) and check for errors. If it finds some then you need to consider replacing the damaged files with good ones (from your regular backup )

Another thought. Install the disc and ask it to repair the game. Unfortunate that it might change the game back it's original install. I ran into this yesterday.

This was offered up to me yesterday. Run through it and see if this will cure your computer ills.


Would suggest the following course of action with respect to installations.

1. Install a clean version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3
2. Patch it to 1.4b
3. Copy the whole folder and paste it whenever you want the new installation to be. After that rename it to whatever you like. Let's say GWX.
4. Now put the multiSH3 into the GWX folder and run it. When asked put GWX as the default directory where your careers will be saved.
5. After all this install GWX in the GWX folder, make a shortcut to the desctop and you're ready to play.
6. Now you can install the SH3Cmd 2.7
7. After the installation is complete you right-click onto the desktop icon. You click on properties and where it say target you type "C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX. Now this is the example of my SH3Cmd that will check the files in the My Documents\GWX folder that is generated by the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX installation. After that this particular installation of SH3Cmd is linked to that installation of SH (GWX in this case).

I would suggest you do a different installation of SH3Cmd for each different installation of SH you have. That way you don't get the SH3Cmd confused and you don't mess up things.

Also I would suggest to leave the clean patched version of SH3 in the C\Program Files\Ubisoft\SH3 untouched as that way you can always copy it and paste it to add new mods. If you want to make new installations always copy and paste this folder and DO NOT USE the Installer of SH3 again (at least not for as long as the game is already installed)



Also, yesterday morning I received a virus alert from Norton. The file is DiskCleaner.EXE. I had to update my Norton and then scan my drive looking for this nasty bugger. It did not find it. So that was nice and I know it is not hidding out somewhere on my drive. At any rate, update your virus protection and run it again. See what happens.

There is a simple fix

Hold everything, I have a solution for you - I had the exact same problem, it is a Starforce issue and there is a fix.
I'm at work - I can post you the solution when I get home (in about 8 hours) - the fix is simple, so don't go running a whole bunch of antivirus tools or whatever (good advice for virises, kaleuns, I salute your solutions, but this is a one-torp job, no need for a spread )

Nein, Kaleun - it is the solution that Starforce tech support sent me, 100% legit. Just saving the kaleun the day or two it will take to get his reply from Starforce.
