Default Naval Academy Torpedo Hints

Gday all, just joined. I have done alot of reading online to help me learn, but I continue to only achieve average on the torpedo academy, not excellent.

Im using guided noob mode, I get the gyro angle green, I have a good range under 1000 meters but not closer than 600 but the ships either avoid it or it bounces off. I never have enough torpedos.

I thought on guided mode I can just go green for gyro, good range, open door with q and fire?

Angle on Bow should be 90° (+-5°) for impact pistol....u can use magnetic pistol (then set the torpedo depth to keel depth of the target + 0,5 m - 1 m) then the angle on bow don´t play the ultimate role.
Example: 1 C3 Cargo...I think 9m keel depth if I remember right...set torpedo depth to 9,7 m and set to magnetic.

Hope this helps

Hi Bathrone and welcome to subsim!

TIP 1: Press "q" to open your torpedo doors and then wait a few seconds each time before firing.

TIP 2: You're correct in making sure the gyro angle is as close to "000" as possible, i.e. green triangle.

TIP 3: If you are running the torpedoes in so that they impact with the enemy ship make sure they hit perpendicular to the direction the target is travelling in. They must also strike perpendicular in the vertical plane. By that I mean if the torp strikes the target towards it's keel where the hull is sloping it will likely bounce off. Make sure the fish runs at a depth where it will hit square on the side of the hull.

TIP 4: Adjust the speed of your torpedoes. If you hit "F6" you will notice a bunch of dials and knobs. Click on the knob on the top right and you can toggle between slow, medium and fast settings. If this changes then you are using steam torpedoes. The steam fish have a range of 5.5/7.5/12km depending on the speed setting where a slower setting provides more range. If this knob doesn't move then you are using electric torps which have a maximum range of 3km at the start of the war. A faster setting will give the enemy ships far less time to evade the incoming torpedoes.

TIP 5: Pertinent to "Tip 3", on the same screen as above (hit "F6"), you can adjust the depth of the torp. If you want to have the fish detonate on impact then run the fish at about 3-4m for most cargo ships and at about 1.5-2m for warships. If you obviously are not going to be able to hit the target squarely with an impact shot then you need to fire the torpedo under the target and have it explode beneath using a magnetic trigger. To do this you need to know the draft of the target. While aiming at the ship with your scope, click on the word "ship:" on the notepad on the top right. This will bring up the identification book. Check the draft on the ship displayed and remember this number. Next hit "F6" and make sure the knob beneath the speed knob is set to M (for magnetic (I=Impact btw). Then turn the dial to the left of these knobs to adjust the torpedoes depth so that it will run 1 or two metres below the keel of the target.

Good luck and good hunting!
