Brings back memories of when I was in the navy in the late seventies...in very adverse weather conditions you would see the bow of the ship go under the surface and sometimes it could take 20 or so seconds for it to appear again

No, this is, Lake Superior, very cold, fresh water. There was always some minor animosity between fresh and salt water sailors...I never understood why. From a physical standpoint, each kind of liquid can drown a man just as dead.

Some of the ships that ply their trade on the Great Lakes are 1000 footers(300m)...more common size are 183m to 216m.

For some reason or other I can just visualize a contest between two men, chained to the bow of the ship in this storm, to see who can withstand the abuse the longest.

Naturally, neither of them would survive.

The Great Lakes can be extremely dangerous, shipwrecks litter the bottoms of all of the lakes, and have most often been caused by misjudging the weather, which can get very very bad as you can see from the pictures. Also, the Lakes can act in ways not normally seen in the oceans, in Lake Michigan a sort of lake tsunami called a Seiche has killed plenty of people both on the shore and on the water. Ice is also a big issue in the winter, the Canadian and US Coast Guards both maintain a big icebreaker on the lakes to facilitate shipping and the USCG also maintains a few smaller tugs and bouy tenders that can break ice as well.
