Default Close Call (Pic Heavy)

I usually don't post my experiences, but this one was well worth it. I was off the south coast of Ireland after a relatively fruitless patrol of AM54. It was a calm (4m/s winds) clear day when my watchcrew spotted a warship at about 320. I ordered a drive to pd, but before my IXB could flood her tanks, I was spotted and the V&W went hard to stb and put her main batts on me. No hits, but a close call. I ordered 90 m (near bottom) at flank, put my rudder to 5 degrees stb and rigged for silent running. After about 5 mins of silence, she dropped a few cans on me that shook me up, but no damage. To my surprise, she started dc'ing away from me as opposed to with my direction of movement, so the next pass she made at about 100m behind me, I ordered pd at flank during the turbulance to hopefully put an electric eel in her from my stern tube. I don't know if the V&W read my mind or what, but at about 30m I ordered silent speed again, but she was right on top of me. Layed some cans on me that decimated my ship. Lost flak guns, periscopes, radio, stb engine, forward batts and stern quarters. Luckily no loss of life. Heavy flooding to 3/4 of the ship and I started to sink. I ordered ahead flank and blow ballast. I figured I had a better chance on the surface rather at 100m of seafloor and being blown apart.

When I got to the surface, I was running aproximately parallel to her on my stb side, so I ordered hard to port to hopefully get my stern tubes on her and reduce my profile for her batteries (which didn't help much).

I took a real beating, but I got a steam fish off, high speed. Hit her in the aft, which took out her rear battery. I shot off another torp, but before my torp could hit, it took just one 105 mm round to the fore ammo bunker to send her up: (Note the fact she was destroyed was before the torpedo hit)

She took me down to 16% hull integridy and left me permanately flooded in rear compartments, but no loss of life. I really like this shot:

On my way back to Lorient, I encountered 2 more destroyers, so I went to pd, but due to the water in the back, I had to remain at flank speed to keep me at depth. Made it home safe, and scored 30000 tonnes. I was thinking to myself "Man, no point in repairing this vessel, should just buy a new one", then presto, IXC is available. Talk about timing.
