Default um, scuse me please, do you see 'birds in the rigging'?

Hello people. I feel a grockle coming in here with my query, but as the Ubi forum for this game seems not to be accepting logins, I thought I would look elsewhere and found YOU - so here I am.

I have owned SH3 for some time, and never 'got round' to playing it, being a slow but dogged 'X-Universe' player as well ( a space-sim genre, bit like a modern Elite), and there only being so many hours in the day ( well, night actually) to indulge myself. However, a few weeks back I started in on it and instantly got hooked simply because of the realism of how the ships roll and the waves break - all that sort of stuff. Because it seems such a well-made game ( or sim if you prefer), I wanted to do it properly, so enrolled in the Naval Academy and ( slowly) worked my way through the different training scenarios.
At present I am on Torpedoes, and have actually 'killed' the required amount of ships ( through luck more than skill I think), but my results were 'unsatisfactory' presumably because I did not take the sub far enough 'back to base' before coming out of that training session, so I have to do it all again. Well that is fine, thing is, while I was actually in SH3, few days back, something nasty happened to one of my SLI graphics cards and I had to replace it. Because we could not find another Geforce 6800 to pair up with the good one, we bought two Geforce 7600's, which are technically superior, being a later model, so I expected to have improved graphics experience. Well... in X3 everything seems to be fine and I have no grumbles, but in SH3 I have seen something which I do not remember was there before - so that is why I am here.

When you first surface, in the torpedo training exercise, you see two ships dead ahead - the big cargo vessel and a stationary small merchant closest. I thought that with my old graphics, when I looked through the scope at this vessel, I could see its rigging as a continued line, no breaks, just as you would in real life. However, now when I look through the scope, unless a ship is really quite close, the rigging appears to be broken up into little black squares - looks just like a load of birds perching on an invisible wire. I can live with this but it does spoil the realism a bit, and if there is a graphics tweak I should be tweaking ( I am a bit dim on all the technicalities there), then I would like to know - but mostly my question is, what do YOU see?

My machine is quite powerful (P4 3.4 GB processor), and the graphics cards, as I said, are two PCIe Geforce 7600 GT's with SLI enabled.

There are other things I would like to ask you too - but not here and not now. However, if there is a sticky on AOB, understanding headings, maps and other arcane skills ( I would look but have to go downstairs to prepare hubs lunch like five minutes ago) I may find insight there and not have to be an irritating novice in the main forum.

For now, If you can advise me on the 'birds in the rigging appearance' according to what others expect to see, it would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to Subsim (your better off here anyway )

To answer you're question directly - I have never actually played the tutorials so I'm not too sure. However, one thing springs to mind, have you got AA + AF maxed out on you card?

Next, comes the big question. Are you playing Stock SH3? If so there have been significant improvements with this game.

Firstly, get yourself the offical Patch 1.4b.

Then have a look at the supermod options.

You currently have a choice from GWX, NYGM 2.3 & UBWAC.

Now, without covering really old news, the basics are that these three all offer improved realism (not too much but certainly more than the standard box version). Also, GWX & UBWAC offer improved graphics & sounds.

Being a GWX user (slightly biased :p) I would say that GWX offers the best allround package, you will surprised at the changes made.

The short of it is, you can find alot of info here and in the Mods section. Also, we will always help if we can.

Again, Welcome Aboard & Enjoy your Stay.

Edit - See the Newbie Links - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96026 I'm not sure how upto date this is but it's a good start.

hello danlisa, pleased to meetcha

have just had a look at the nVidia control panel for the 3d settings, and it is set to max quality. I did take a look at managing the settings myself, but suspected my fiddling would be counterproductive. I never have 'played around' with the 3d settings, apart from opting for a preset for X3, so figure it ought to be as good as it ever was in that department.

The next point you raise I think might be more on target. I DID have the 1b patch, and applied it, and I downloaded the Grey Wolves ( ?) mod, but did nothing with it as I wanted to make sure it was OK before I went ahead ( I guess it is hey). When the card went wrong, while I was in SH3, I thought at first it was the game (actually a capacitor had peeled of the board) and so uninstalled it. Well, I have been to where I park the game and now there is no patch and no grey wolf mod to be seen in that folder, so I guess they'm gone. I shall download them both and install and then see what happens (and report back here if you like )
Thank you for your welcome, I am encouraged, and will be back to scour the guidance on all the things I don't yet understand how to do. I also want to know who it is that seems to be fighting on 'my' side when I go into the Convoy attack training session ( which I did last night out of curiosity), but I guess that can wait too.

See you on the water then, ahoy, and all that briney stuff

While you're getting sorted, click on my Sig and d/l the manual for GWX. It's a very good read and will give you some idea of how far SH3 has progressed.

Please keep us updated & we'll help if we can.

Hi and welcome to Subsim
Yes you are better off here :rotfl:

I personally would get used to playing SH3 before you add on GWX
Tis a big step up in gameplay and you might want to learn the basics in SH3 first

Enjoy your stay
Someone will always answer any queries

Hi and Welcome to this lovely community.

X3 reunion you say

I love that game myself and do play it from time to time.

But nowadays SH3 have taken all my attention.

And listen to bigboywooly
His suggestion is good. best to lern the basic of the game and do some patrols before you add some mods. GWX is much harder to play than the stock.

well, a BIG thankyou danlisa, and thank you all for the welcome.

I d/l'd the 1.4b patch and installed that, and instant improvement in the graphics - no more birds in the rigging; very happy-making that was. THEN I downloaded GWX ( see, I am getting the terminology a bit better now) and... sorry bigboy, I did it before I saw your post... WOW!! Awesome improvement in the game I think. I can hardly wait to get back into it tonight. I almost want to start from scratch, just to see the improvements in every part. I already have loads of questions, but maybe the manual will help me, and any stickies you have on here.

I saw in the download notes ( I got it via GameShadow) that there is some optional detail I can add - JMW or summat? Some of the options looked interesting. I would love to have Das Boot music playing in the background and saw some mention of that film, also I can extend the visibility. There were others, something about changing the face icons for the members of the crew, stopping them wearing their medals. I am not clear as to how I access these available options, but, more importantly, if I do, and then decide I do not want them, can I undo them I wonder?

Anyway, my original 'complaint' about the birds in the rigging is comprehensively dealt with, and now the graphics are ace, and the whole Grey Wolf package is a super upgrade. Thanks again Wonderful!!

Oh dear Vikinger - too late, BB's advice fell on ears that were not hearing, or rather eyes that were not seeing! Still, hard or not, with good folks in a dedicated community to ask help from, I should be able to get by. Can't be any worse than my space piloting in X3. Glad a fellow X3 enthusiast is here too. If this forum is as friendly as Egosoft I shall feel quite at home.

In the SilentHunterIII directory ( C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII ) you will find JSGME already installed
Click on the program icon and you will see a list of available mods on the left hand side
Click a mod you want
Click enable in the middle column
And done

If you dont like it you click the mod in the right column and click disable
Simple

As you have already installed GWX dont forget to add the Dec 23rd update

http://files.filefront.com/GWX___Dec.../fileinfo.html

Download and extract into the mods folder in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII and enable through JSGME

THIS SHOULD BE THE FIRST MOD YOU ENABLE

Make sure you are back in port before adding
Any problems just ask

Hehe

I enjoy the Egosoft forum alot also but somehow i think and find this forum here more firendly than Egosoft (how now that can be)

You never hear any hard word here and people have greate respect for each other.
But this forum have people in all ages and SH3 is more than a game. its a community where many are intressted in the historical happenings around WW2 submarines.

Hope you enjoy the game and the forum

and I followed it and did it line by line, so actually I enabled the JSGME options before the Dec 23rd update, so maybe I did it wrong... I will see soon enough

'Grockle' for the unknowing is a slightly put-down term for tourists and visitors
Yus I am persuaded that I am of the female gender - I haven't strayed into an all-male domain I hope; there are lady sailors now so I hope you will tolerate me and be gallant about it

Avatars... I could put a piccy of my dog there I spose, she is quite 'wolfy', being a GSD, and a darn sight prettier than me! If not, I will give it a miss.

Vikinger, it sounds a good place, I am pleased, no, tickled pink indeed, to have found it.

Now I am going to get my feet wet in SH3, and go right back to the beginning of the tutorials to learn it proper like, if I can get my aging braincells around it!

Ahh, emmits in Cornwall.

The Dec 23rd Fix needs to be enabled before all other mods.
