If you are using SH3Cmd you can change it from there. A value of 18-20 will give you good visibility

When underwater, you're better off working with your ears than with your eyes...

Correct, but I found myself a lot of times in the position of having to find my way in a field of mines, using the observation perisope. By the way, in real life, can a submarine commander see anything through the periscope while underwater ?

Never experienced that, I stay away from places with possible minefields (except from friendly bases, but there is a map and a guide...)

I spent all my youth on the french coast of the Channel and did a lot of diving as well as on the Atlantic coast. With the tides there is always sand in the water and when you can see 10 m away you are on a very lucky day...

So, it's dayclear...a submarine commander would not see anything through the periscope, while underwasser.
