Great article in the paper today telling some history behind Hans Karpf, his boat U-632 and a new born daughter... Long story short, his living daughter (now 63) always wondered if her father knew that she was born. U-632 was sunk 2 weeks after her birth near iceland... A researcher, after many years, found a deciphered message to U-632 that said "Hero daughter born on 18 March. Congratulations"
Nice to see her able to get on with life & took me by surprise to see a picture of a Kaleun in the conning tower of a VIIC on the back page of the paper.. |

Good story!
BdU was indeed known to pass along personal info to crews at sea. There's the famous story about Donitz sending a message to U-47 when Gunther Prien's daughter was born: “Ein U-boot ohne Sebrohr ist heute angekommen” (A submarine without periscope arrived today).
