A few questions concerning renown, realism settings and promotions

Hi there, I'm new tot he forums (2nd post). I guess I grabbed SH3 a year ago, after Gamespot wrote a pretty good review and gave it a good score. I've always been a sim fan (mostly Fighter sims and some realistic shooters) and a historry buff. I played vanilla SH3 for a long time but found it great, and I found the difficulty scaling incredible, it totally allowed me to get into the game.

I ended up dropping SH3 in favor of some other games (you can only play som many at a time) but just came back after I read up about GWX (which I must add, is one of the best, if not the best mod ever made for a game).

Now, I don't play SH3 at full realism because I'm not that fanatic for simulating the more tiring aspects of real WWII U-Boat combat (estimating range, speed, headingm etc.) and I really like the free-cam, even though it is a bit of a cheat. With my settings I get a realism rating of 54%. (Hey, I know some of you more "hardcore" subsimmers will think I'm a pussy, but flight sims are my thing. I prefer to be at 25k feet in my F-16., radar scanning out to 80 nm and AIM-120s under my wings).

Anyway, my questions:

- Do realism settings affect how much renown you earn? If so, are the penalties percentual or fixed?

- Are your Captain's promotions renown associated? If so, what are the different requirements for the different pay grades?

I'll be really glad if someone can give a thorough answer to those.

Default questions

Check the file ubisoft\SilentHenterIII\data\config\main config. In it you will find answers to all your questions. Open the file with notebook.

Welcome Falcon!

If you look on the sticky threads above there is one that leads to the community manual (under Useful Links I believe). In the community manual it gives the renown calculation (realism definitely affects it) and how much renown is needed for a promotion.

Cheers

Your patrol score is based on Tonnage, type of vessel sunk/aircraft shot down, damage to the U-boat or personnel and realism setting.. I started out at 29% realism and on my next career, moved it up to 47%.. It made a huge difference in renown but the patrols are more difficult..

Good Luck and here's a helpful site. It'll show costs & renown earned for different things:

Speaking of renown per ship, is there a listing of renown earned per ship type in GWX or do I have to dig into the game files for this?

Welcome aboard Swab! If at all possible, get your monitor and keyboard into the bathroom for some good reading in the community help forum. You can get a lot of good reading done in the room. Quite often quiet and no one will disturb you! Plus, once you start playing the game, silent running brings on a whole new meaning
