Hello, first post here and I must say I love silent hunter 3, the stock damage in game is ok but I prefer to add more realisim to it and I have tweaked everything to get it just how I like it except flooding. I have found a nice little tweak program that allows me to change the rate at which the boat floods but I hate when one room fills up and your mission is over because of flooding. Is there a way to get around this? Say I get Dced and I have damage and sink to the bottom but don't get to a crush depth and one room fills up but it doesn't end the mission I want this and I cannot figure out how to get it. Any help? I don't know much about how real that woulda been in the war but wasn't there a way to shut rooms off with sealed doors to stop the flooding?

While I can't help you with this I do agree that just because a room floods doesn't mean its not totally impossible to get home (Just very hard). So anyone have a theory at least?

I thought that maybe you could just seal the room off and stop the whole boat from flooding, in theory though I guess you couldn't really do that because it would cut half of the ship off. I'm not to sure about what kind of pumping mechanisims subs used but I thought maybe once a room was flooded and it was sealed it could be pumped some how? I don't know if you could do that in real life, even if it is not realistic I don't want my mission to end just because one room gets flooded. I have fought some battles out for hours where it comes down to me and a destroyer or a single ship and my crippled subs mission gets ended because a room got flooded, fights I could have won if the mission hadn't ended. I'm desperatley looking for a fix if anybody could pls help me.

A flooded compartment would alter trim and other properties of a sub, making it almost impossible to control. Even if it was a small compartment, the disruption to the crew would be incredible.

There is a thread somewhere here that talks about an up coming mod as part of GWX that lets you mess with trim. I don't know if there is a way to seal off a compartment that's totally flooded. I agree with Bookworm_020 that control and disruption would almost certainly scupper your chances of actually getting home, let alone fighting a battle.
I found this site which talks about salvage operations for flooded/sunk submarines which was completed by the USN around the end of WWII. http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/air/chap6.htm In reading this I guess it might be possible to get underway with a submarine fitted with this sort of system, but I don;t think you'd want to be messing with this whilst under attack. I don't recall reading anywhere about uboats having such a system.:hmm: Anyone else know if they carried this sort of equipment? |

http://uboat.net/allies/ships/uss_bogue.htm tells about U-758 which "put up heavy antiaircraft fire from her new quadruple 20mm cannons. She eventually submerged, withstood depth charge attacks by destroyer Clemson, and escaped despite a flooded compartment." Sot it was possible! that still leaves the question as to whether this could be modelled under SH3. Perhaps messing with the damage settings, but that might give you an invincible sub.

Flooding resulted in sea water mixing with battery acid = chlorine gas
Chlorine gas was deadly and very much feared. U-boats were not divided into many little water tight departments like shown on the crew diagram. If I recall correctly, there were only two water tight bulkheads in the U-boats; one just forward of the control room and one aft. These could be closed but massive uncontrolled flooding fore or aft would create a major trim problem. |

For the flooding problem I recommend this: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=94238 It's been said that GWX will encorporate it in some manner (check the GWX news thread in the Mod SubForum, I just can't remember on which page it was). |

I have to say that once i installed GW1.1 i now have a chance to actually recover from a flooding while you a little bit more time. In stock Sh3 it was usually to late when you got a good hit from a Depthcharge.

I can see a point here. Say that a compartment floods totally and the boat is on the bottom. It is no where near crush depth. If the total compartment floods, game over. Well, this sucks because the room could be pumped dry. Say that you are in the middle of the atlantic and you get a room flooded to the ceiling. Of course you are out of control and sinking fast. If you hit crush depth first or flood a room first, boom, game over. So laying on the ocean floor with a flooded room, game over, yeah possible you could not get to the surface. If you blow the tanks to surface and that does not work and the room is flooded, game should be over. Opportunity to pump the room and blow tanks to surface should be given. Unfortunate I do not know were to begin within the config files to do this....

Hrm...
I would belive that if you had a compartment completly flooded it would indeed be game over. 1.) the crew would be cut off from one another. 2.) there would be no way to "control" the boat blowing ballast is not going to overcome those tons of sea water. 3.) the only chance would be to try to escape by a hatch... that is if you could get to it and if you were in less than 100 feet of water. Even then youd probably end up with the bends or fish food. 4.) If it was "completly" flooded are chances are that a pump would not have a chance of keeping up with the water let alone overcome the "head" pressure. Best thing to do is when you have flooding is get a repair crew in their ... FAST ! If they cant keep up with it... your hosed... (pun intended) |

Hrmm it seems the thread has went way off, I've noticed a ton of things that have been added and changed in this game due to modding and some are extremely cool and well done, but this cannot be done? I did state I don't care if it is realistic or not, right now I just want to fool around with not dying when one compartment floods.

I understand where your comming from all I was saying is that if a compartment completly floods you are as good as dead. What your asking for is basically a "cheat". Maybe some of the modders can help you out. |
