Default How to calculate speed and range in Wolves of Steel?

OK I'm watching some YouTube videos on using the attack wheel and such when plotting attacks using 100% realism as I am now.

I'm on Wolves of Steel 1.06 04h.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to calculate speed and distance.

For speed, back in the SH3 days I would use the fixed wire method, letting the target track across the vertical reticle of the scope, and then, using the ship length, find it's speed using this formula:

(Ship Length In Meters) * 1.94 / (Time in Seconds)

The problem is the ship recognition sheets available in this version of WoS are "antique looking" to be real, and I can rarely find what I see through the scope in the recognition guide. There used to be a flip-through book that showed all the different ships and viewed at different angles, but I can't find that now. Is that gone in WoS?

Another way to do it, per the video, is to plot the position of the ship, wait some amount of time, then plot it again, and then transpose the second measurement the amount of distance your sub moved.

To do this in the YouTube video the guy had access to charts that showed meters/kilometers movement for different speeds and times, but I do not see this chart available in WoS. Is it gone?

The final thing is the stadiometer. In the YouTube video, the guy uses the flip-through recognition manual to find the target ship, then uses the "send mast height to TDC" button to send the mast height to the TDC.

With the flip-through book gone (if it is), how do you send mast height to the TDC?

I now have to learn about the RAOBF thingy - maybe it helps solve some of these issues.

Hi Steve
Post #108 U-Jagd Tutorial For Silent Hunter 5
The TWOS recognition manual E Key shortcut gives you all the information you should need.
Take 2 bearings 5 minutes using the stadimeter and marking them on the map.
Then use the 5 minute column of the speed chart to give you the distance travelled.

Where is the speed chart?

OK I found the other charts. You have to scroll wheel down to see them in the list.

I also found the flip-through recognition manual.

Question: If you do not use the flip-through recognition manual, how do you send the mast height to the TDC?

You have to use the recognition manual.
Lock the target, click on send mast height to the TDC.

Actually, you don't.

If you click on the Range link in the WO dialog panel, there is a place to manually enter the mast height.

I'm not sure what this actually does to the TDC though. By itself that information is not useful to the TDC.

It's useful when using the RAOBF tool though, but you don't have to "send" it to the TDC I don't think.

Hi Steve
I think what you are referring to is manually entering the mast height when using the periscopes graduation lines.

Ah, yes, that must be it for the TDS - the Stadiometer.

So you can manually enter the mast height through the WO dialog and then use the Stadiometer to calculate range based on that mast height.

Hi, thanks for a very good mod! I have a problem that i cant find a ship recognition manual which has "send mast height to tdc". I can get the book which has two big "pages" but doesen't have option to send the mast height. I used to have a small grey book which propably had the button. I think that i closed it and now i cant find it. I deleted all draggables -files but problem remains.

Default recognition manual

It appears that Steve found it, but I can't seem to find the recognition manual when the TDC is in manual.

Next time, first check some documentation before you make a post...
