Icon8 SH5 CTD - Help please.

Hello,

I have recently started playing SH5 again and have been reading up (for several days now) on mods, how to install them, etc.

I have an original copy of SH5 Gold Edition (uplay launcher in offline mode) and a more than enough capable computer. It has been updated to patch 1.2 using the Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\Support\GameUpdater\gu.exe program, and after installing my mods using the order posted bellow my game has also been patched successfully using TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_168_0.

When installing mods I followed Sobers tutorial http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192374
I watched his videos as well as read through most of the documentation.

Even though I do not have all of the mods that he has, I tried to replicate his mod load order as best as I could. This is my mod load order:

I made sure to skip the tutorial, load in, set my settings and reload, before I start playing the campaign - in short - I really did my best to follow all of his recommendations on how to start a new campaign with mods properly.

When requesting the mission Baltic Operations (OHII 1st of September mission) my game CTDs at random - usually before I get to the area of operations. I once managed to intercept the Polish convoy and sink two ships (the German AI aircraft helped me with that), but then after sailing for a few minutes my game crashed again..

I guess what I am trying to ask is, what could be the case or the reason behind these crashes.

Help would be greatly appreciated

There is a critical patch for the Dyn 2.9 mod that you have not installed. It's called

DynEnv v2.9 - No Underwater Impurity Patch


I don't know if this will correct CTD's however. You need to carefully read the Dyn 2.9 documentation, some optional mods exclude each other and can cause CTD when your computer is not performant enough (not your case), or if they are installed when they should not (I bet it's your case).

I would install these mods first, in position 2 in your list:
SteelViking's Interior Mod V1.2

Also every sound mod just before NewUIs 7_5_0 and not before.

All equipment upgrades must be installed first before NewUIs, after SteelVikings mods and before sound mods. Also your equipment fixes are not complete, the right things to install and the right order is:

"Water reflections intensity varied by available sunlight by TheDarkWraith" must be installed immediately after Dyn 2.9 .


The R.S.D. mod can cause CTD's in rare cases, read the doc, but it's ok with the UZO patch I think.


Your modlist shows important errors in the mod order, so it's no surprise that you get CTDs IMO. You have to consult the mod readme's which tell about compatibility and install order relative to other mods.
Correct what I said above and go see if it resolves your crashes. Also deinstall some optional Dyn mods.

I actually remember reading up on the "No underwater impurity patch". I decided to check it out again and this is what it says:
DynEnv v2.9 - No Underwater Impurity Patch (date added: 5 Mar 2013)
Removes underwater impurity particles. Enable it after the Main Mod and either of the Enhanced Visibility optional mods, if used.
NOTE: required by the Enhanced Visibility submod high version, to fix a bug which makes impurity to be rendered as solid white squares.

I guessed it was only required by the Enhanced Visibility submod high version, so that is why I did not install this patch (my game is also not rendering any solid white squares)

I would like to stress again that I was following the basic install order of Sobers Mega Mod, a mod pack, that from what I've heard should be virtually CTD free..
What was strange to me also is that he (Sober) has the Equipment upgrades installed AFTER and not before NewUI's. I'll copy his Mega Mod install order bellow for easier reference:

However, I do have some good news after all - I was tweaking my main.cfg Time Compression settings (located in Documents\SH5\data\cfg) and after relaunching the game with tweaked TC settings, I got no CTD's after 2 hours of playing the first OHII mission - Baltic Operations, all the way from the 31st of August through to nearly the end of September 3rd (my TC varied from 1x - 1024X and I sunk 4 ships using the deck gun and 1 torpedo - and the game ran no problem!)

@XenonSurf I would like to thank you for your reply.. though, to be honest, I'll keep my fingers crossed for now with my current mod and game config.

If I get more CTD's I'll go ahead and try new mod load orders and make sure to keep you all updated in this thread.. who knows - might help someone else too

In general, I would not recommend to install so many mods (which are mostly included in TWoS as you said) at the same time, Silent Hunter titles tend to be extremely unstable when modified.
Mega Mods are better for that reason.

The problem you have is you are going to spend so much time trying to fix your game rather than playing it that you will end up frustrated and dumping the game.

The days of the mod lists like yours are over thank goodness the way forward is with TWoS.

Looks like my game isn't that stable after all... I think I might give TWoS a shot since it has pretty much all of the mods I like anywyas, but I do have a couple of questions.. (I dead read through the link you sent me, but am not sure if I understood these two things)

1. I saw there was no mention of TDW's Generic patcher - can I patch the game after I install TWoS, or should I not do it..?

2. I like playing realistically, but am not too big of a fan of completely realistic navigation.. I just can't seem to get a hang of realistic navigation and would prefer the "point and click" method of the stock type of navigation in SH5, if you know what I mean.. - Is there a way to play TWoS without real navigation?

I am sorry if this has been answered before, but would really appreciate your help

Ah, quick update.

I seemed to have overlooked the actual TWoS install instructions PDF!

I am going to try this mod out ASAP

Still not sure if Real Navi can be disabled in the install options, but I did see the notes regarding the patcher.

Real Nav is optional addon in TWoS - it can be disabled through JGSME either during or after installation (though I wouldn't recommend disabling mid-campaign).

Hi all.

I've been messing around with TWoS for a couple of days right now and have been enjoying it. For the most part..

I have read virtually EVERYTHING there is to know about this mod (including all of the instructional manuals that come installed with it and the main forum posts) and even learned how to used the Enigma Machine, but I have a few issues...

First of all - let there be no doubt that my game and this mod are installed absolutely correctly and that my computer is absolutely more than capable (6 core, 12 thread Intel i7 (OC'd and water cooled), GTX 780 GPU, 16GB of ram, etc. etc... granted it is an older system, but SH5 is an older game anyways)

I made sure to uninstall my prev game, deleted all the left over files from both SH5 and also Ubisoft, restarted the computer, fresh install, restarted the comp. again, updated to 1.2, and started the game up 1 time (as it says in the TWoS instructions), restarted, installed TWoS (all of the SH5, Ubisoft and associated Mod exe's have the run as admin box ticked), restared, enabled optional Enigma, Interior Food Stocks, Map contact colors and Radio reports Auto target ID mods and restarted again. I even Alt TAB on the main menu and give osi.exe the highest priority (for campaign continuation, as described in the instructions)

The game runs fine, BUT

There is clipping inside of the interior (with the black "instrument labels" and the enigma machine), my crew keeps notifying me EVERY 5 seconds about smoke on the horizon (there was a ship, yes, but I didn't need to know about her every 5 seconds), and the deck gun crew keeps "walking away" (though, maybe that was due to the seas being somewhat rough... I guess... - could that be an issue?)

In spite of everything I absolutely enjoyed this modpack and will def. be using it in the future, but if anyone could shed any light on the issues described above I would once again be grateful

Also - how do you delete "cloud synced" save games? I do have the offline thing in Uplay ticked, but everytime I reinstall the game they keep comming back (yes I deleted my SH5 documents folder, and also delted the Ubisoft folder in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher directory...

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\savegames\"a string of letters and numbers"\3\ is this where the savegames would be synced online btw?

I recommend you to watch videos about how to use the NewUIs in SH5, otherwise you will always have trouble playing the game. This is not included in the WoS documentation.
Stoianm has made a good 6-part video serie available on Youtube about all buttons you can use in the TDW NewUI interface.


With WoS or a long modlist loaded you must have a pretty good computer system. Also the TDW NewUIs contained in WoS (and every good modlist) is not perfect. After loading a save, it's good practise to first go shortly in the compartments, go up to bridge and down the ladder, and not using high TC or teleport immediately. Also sometimes mouse clicks or key commands don't work. Hit twice NumPad Enter key to unblock. After longer play it's necessary to save & reload or the game gets messy, this also applies to WoS to a smaller extend.


Cloud saves are not integral part of the game, it's Ubisoft/Steam/U-Play stuff which I don't bother with, you have to get infos there. Normally saves are located in a SH5 folder in your Documents folder in Windows.
