Default Friendly AI ships/subs

are there any friendly AI ships/subs or aircraft that patrol in SH4? And will friendly aircraft attack a reported convoy?

I'm no expert, (not seen it myself) but I have heard that if friendlies are in the area they may respond to a contact report that you send in.

Personally, several times I've spent a half hour setting up an ambush only to see my quarry attacked and sunk by "friendly" aircraft.

It depends on the mod you play, in FOTRSU there are a lot of 'Neutral' ships or battleships whatever they do, I was not capable of intercepting one because always too far away after getting a report. They appear as green icons on your map. I sometimes have encountered single friendly destroyers heading in a sort of random course, no big deal but it could be useful to follow the ship if it's heading where you want to go. Better have an escort, don't you think...

It's not like in SH3 or SH5 where friendly units actively partecipate in battles or such, in SH4 this doesn't happen AFAIK, except maybe in some 'dynamic missisons' which are scripted during campaign, the different campaign mods (TMO and RSRDC in particular) are not made and designed for excessive presence of friendly units and battles involved, and the stock game even less.

Friendly aircraft:
If you spot a convoy or task force you have the possibility to make a report by using the ship icon which is located in your Mission Orders' page. If a friendly airport or aircraft carrier is within short range (up to 600 miles or such) you can get air support after some time, IN THEORY, but I still have to see this.

in all of the thousands of missions that my valiant crew and i have been on, i can remember only one time when i witnessed friendly forces attacking enemy forces in my presence.
it was in the Pacific Theatre and it involved aircraft but i cannot remember which mod-set i was playing and it was one time. never to be repeated.

Default Targets lost to friendlies

I'm guessing that these guys were taken out by "friendlies."
I stalked them through two course changes out of Taipei and then lost them on sonar. I'm guessing a friendly unit found them.

BTW... is there a trick to getting images stored on steam to appear in-line? I put the full url of the image in the pop-up box and nothing appears in the post

To post to where the image shows, use the img tag, and not the url. ie: [img]TheURLtoMyPic.jpg[/img], which should then show it inline - but only if the other site allows it. I am not sure of Steam Community's UA.

As for the "friendlies", it all depends upon where you are, and when you are there. Generally speaking, from March of 1942 until late 1943, you will be the only "friendly" in that area. Once the carriers start roaming about the western Pacific though, and freely distributing Mischer Hair Cuts, then you might find some USN flyboys taking out some shipping. There are a few forays in late 1942 and early 1943 as far as Marcus Island, but I don't think they went toward Formosa for a time... As you say though, bad weather will also take out shipping, and I have seen the occasional fratricide incident occur, but usually only when they are after you. Since those two are spaced the way that they are, I would suspect some "help" also...

Not sure what you mean by excessive, but RSRD has every battle scripted and obviously knowing the history you can get close and partake in it. During the Solomon's it can be right fun to get in all the surface battles and score a lot of kills with friendly surface units and air power. Course you have to be careful, more than once I was hiding under a large enemy ship such as a BB I had stopped at night and would hide under it to avoid escorts and I had US planes attack it at dawn and blew it up right over me...which killed me too.
