Default 1024 time compression

Kind of a cheat using 1024 time compression, as the crew does not get exhausted but they do not sleep either.

There are a LOT of issues with the game when you go over 256x even...

Remember, 1024x time compression is like jumping close to 20 minutes (1080 seconds) in 1 second. That's a big leap. I don't know how many updates the game does in 1 second, like a fixed rate (like minecraft ticks) or just a variable rate like your screen FPS. But that is no doubt a big gap between things happening. You could jump in the middle of a air patrol, escort gun range, beach yourself in the Kiel Kanal.

Default Pushing the game too far

If you play at >256 time compression you get the following:
  • Aircraft appearing at short range (some would say this is more realistic)
  • Escorts charging out of fog or rain. This can lead to a "you're dead" message with no chance to react.
  • Fatal collisions, typically near home port. Frequently with the vessel sent out to escort you back in!

It seems that the campaign in SH3 is an afterthought introduced thanks to folks behind this forum. The original vision seems to have been just playing through a set of tactical scenarios. This explains why the crew fatigue system is based on "action stations" only without a watch system, why the weather changes in a strange way and why the game engine does not update smoothly at high time compression.
I don't like crawling around a vast ocean in low time compression. life is too short. I prefer the "jump to next action" idea in Cold Waters. Like many here I was a big fan of European Air War back in the day, where Alt-N would catapult you into the next action, sometimes in a frightening situation.
I'm wondering if there is scope for this via SH3 commander - make the "save game and exit" option lead you to a "standing orders" screen, run the campaign offline until something happens, then relaunch the game with an updated save game file.

AFAIK it's perfectly safe to use while submerged. I would lament the game being locked to anything lower than 1024, sometimes when I'm already in the desired/ordered AO (i.e. not transiting) but there's a bad storm, submerging and TCing is the best way to get it over with. Unlike doing it while surfaced, I've never been dangerously surprised by hydrophone contacts at high TC.

Well I think running around at 1024 TC might have been a bad idea.

Planes come at you too fast, they are on top of you and my U-Boat was sunk.

Was doing great 192 tons sunk and 1 incident all gone!

Many players do not recommend TC greater than x 512

Well started a new one in mid 1942 type IX sub.

Got a patrol off of Canada.

Only did 256 TC.

Sunk before I even got there by planes..........

Default If you ask for vanilla you get planes

Ah yes, I vaguely remember the aircraft get a bit silly in vanilla. If I remember correctly they are also absurdly easy to shoot down, but eventually they will get you. A good reason to switch to GWX or NYGM.
Don't use TC>256 in areas where aircraft are about. Crash dive immediately the aircraft is spotted and as soon as the boat is at 10m start to turn. Unlike real allied ASW aircraft the depth charges they drop are still a threat at moderate depths; you are fairly safe at 50m.
When you have been spotted or have sent a radio message you are much more likely to get attacked by aircraft for the next day or so.
However remember the game expects to kill you in the mid war period. I've never got past mid 1944. In fact the game gets slowly worse as a simulation as you get towards the end of the war because the real life equipment and tactics became way more complex.
