Default Neutral Ship Experiment

Just for an experiment I changed the nationality of a ship to Sweden.

Approached a British task force, got no attack from them which was correct, then I fired a torpedo and one of the ships, as it struck the ship I got a CTD.

I was wondering was it because I was playing as a neutral in attack mode, any ideas?

Do you have to have an entry for it in the Roster / Nation / Sea folder? Is Sweden in the DefSide.cfg file?

Yes, I went on a different mission and this time it worked lol.

I went in the middle of a Japanes Task force, they didn't attack me but I sank a lot of them.

They were also being attacked by US aircraft but the US never attacked me, like I said it was an experiment just to see what would happen.
Bit of a cheat really, I had a free for all with no hassle, lining up to the big boys and firing torpedoes at them.

One of the tings I noticed was when I fired a couple of torpedoes at a ship, the DD's came hunting, I moved off but they stayed in the area looking for a submarine, one was even dropping depth charges.

I was playing as a ship, to them I was on their side.
Made me think this could make a good spy mission, you could go anywhere and never be attacked.

I should have said, it isn't just the Roster you need to change the name of but in the UPC file change the country as well.

Yes, if you are dealing with a ship that you play... So Sweden is doing black ops in the Pacific now, eh?... "Sink 'em all!", as some famous person said!

btw, when you sink a "friendly", you become "enemy" for a period of time, but since you are "neutral", it is confusing the AI, which is why they are acting somewhat strangely - or should I say, "more strangely than normal"?? Anyway, the game's AI is not familiar with ship-borne torpedoes either, which is why in mods like FotRSU with the AI ships with torpedoes they miss so often. Their "targeting" is based upon a gun. Same with the response for the AI escorts, in that a torpedo has to come from a sub... So the thing to do, is use torpedoes exclusively, and alter you torpedo bunker to hold a couple of hundred, then you can clear the seas with impunity...

Ha Ha yes, I did play with one ship I forget now and I ran out of torpedoes lol.
I went on the deck gun, managed to sink a couple more but my aim is terrible, having said that they never retaliated to me firing at them.

I also got messages to say I just sank a neutral.

In Destroyer Command, you had a targeting system not too dissimilar from the torpedo set-up, which I liked. Made shooting a lot easier. Still didn't help me much though... - when I played online, my system and internet connection were so slow (how slow were they!), I would often be "dead" before the screen would load to start...

Yes I used to play Destroyer Command, I liked it to be honest.

I remember having a flag ship then you could set different formations for your escorts.
I never played online, in those days my internet couldn't handle it either lol.
There was one guy did a mod for SH2 that was very good, but a lot of people had trouble downloading it because of slow internet and in some cases it cut off if the download was too big.

Funny thing about Destroyer Command it was very stable compared to SH2, at least in my case anyway, used to get those Janus errors with SH2.

Going back to targeting, in SH4 when using a ship as you may know when you get the popup asking if you want to attack, the ship will use the guns and aim and fire long distances and in most cases sink the enemy, I have switched to the external camera and watched the action, can be fun.

I changed the nationality on the Commerce Raider, I used it as a spy ship in the Harbour Recon mission.

Obviously I got no aggression from the other ships, I took my photo then on leaving port I couldn't help myself I took to the deck gun and fired on the carrier that was in the harbour.

Well I don't know what it's armour level was but I emptied my shell store on it and didn't even get a fire going, I left port disappointed lol.
