Default "Cannot comply" at mission start

After returning to Brisbane from my last patrol, my S-18 boat was refitted with a 20mm AA gun (with a mount added to the aft end of the conning tower). But on leaving port I get a "cannot comply" response when I order 1/3 ahead (or any other speed). I tried exiting the campaign and reloading it, tried exiting SH4 and reloading it, tried transferring to Dutch Harbor, tried ending the patrol and starting the next, and tried starting the patrol outside the harbor. None of these seem to fix it. I am using TMO 2.5, the TMO pre-Pearl Harbor career start, and Webster's S-class mod. Is there a fix for this predicament?

Are there crew members in the engine room?

I too got this, I ended up having to re-install, I think it happened after I activated a mod then took it out again but can't be certain.

You got the conning tower upgrade bug, it is a known bug with the game. The bug is more common in the German campaign but here is how to fix it.

F YOU HAVE THE TURM UPGRADE ISSUE (from SKIDMAN):

« Both the Typ VII and the Typ IX U-Boat will receive conning tower upgrades as the game proceeds. Every time I was awarded a new "Turm", the result was a submarine that could not move forward, or backward. A "Cannot comply" message was displayed instead. The crew screen showed missing and empty slots. This bug has been experienced and described before, and -as lurker put it- it is a nasty one. So from my experience a conning tower upgrade means end of your career. This is not acceptable.

How can you continue? Well, there is a workaround: You have to create a dummy file.

1.) Open your saved games folder (SH4/data/cfg/SavedGames), locate the folder that contains the autosave_on_leaving_base-file using the file creation date and time and make a backup copy.

2.) Fire up SH4 and start a new career. Choose date, type of boat and flotilla to match the state of your career as close as possible. Start a new mission. Save the game.

3.) From the new folder (the one you just created in the saved games folder when you saved the dummy game ) you will need the ActiveUserPlayerUnits-file. Copy it to the desktop and open the copied file using a text editor (i.e. wordpad)

4.) Open the ActiveUserPlayerUnits-file from the autosave_on_leaving_base-folder (Step 1) with your text editor

5.) In the AUPU-File from the dummy locate:

[UserPlayerUnit 1.Compartment 1. CrewMemberSlot 1]

copy this line and the following lines till

[UserPlayerUnit 1.UnitPartSlot 1.UnitPart . UpgradePackSlot 1]

near the end of the document.

6.) Replace the lines (Step5) with the content of the clipboard in the AUPU-File from the autosave_on_leaving_base-folder. Save the file.

7.) Copy the manipulated file to the UPCINitial Folder of the autosave_on_leaving_base-folder.

8.) Fire up SH4, choose "Load Game", open the autosave_on_leaving_base-File and play on. Your rank, medals, tons sunk and crew will be preserved and your boat will have the new conning tower.

Sounds complicated, but OM forces you to go through this again and again and practice makes perfect »

Tried your fix. Either I did it wrong, or it just didn't work for me. My other options seem to be to either:

a) End patrol after starting and accept command of new sub, which it offered me when I did that.

b) Start new career close to where I left off (early 43 in Brisbane). Beginning 1943 at Brisbane Command gives the option to pick an S boat.

I'd rather finish my career in the "Old 38", but maybe this is the crew's way of telling me it's time to upgrade us to a new boat lol.

One thing that you can try is to submerge your boat a bit ("sound" the bottom first, and don't hit it), then try to motor ahead. Once you get moving (if you do), then surface and see what happens. I am trying to remember what that is a symptom of, but the grey matter is - well, grey...

If you have any mods installed, you cannot have your game installed in one of the Windows "Program Files" folders, else you'll run into issues when there are configuration file changes. Windows will "protect" you from yourself there, and rollback any changes it does not handle directly.

Do you have your crew stuck at Battle Stations? Have you been "shelling-out" to Windows, by use of the <Windows> key combinations, or by use of the <Alt><Tab> or <Ctrl><Tab> key combinations? That will cause all sorts of weird issues. Also, the game is particular about the video settings, as attested by succerpunch's experience. Your display monitor has a 'native' resolution. If you look in your Windows "Screen Resolution" settings (or whatever they happen to call it in your version of Windows), you'll see a setting that has " (recommended)" next to the resolution setting. That is the one you want to set Windows to, and then go into the game, main menu, and choose "Options", "Graphic Settings". In the upper left, match the resolution in the drop-down box with what you have Windows set to. You have to exit the game to get it to "set", then come back in and see what happens.

You can also try changing the dpi setting in Windows. Find the SH4.exe file in the game's root folder, right-click on it, then choose "Properties" from that context menu with a left-click. On the "Compatibility" tab, click on the "Disable display scaling on high DPI setting" if you're in Windows 7, and "Change display DPI setting" (or something like that) in Windows 10. You want it to be program controlled. While on that "Properties" page, you could also check the "Run as administrator" and if still having issues, either use the Compatibility Troubleshooter, or set it yourself to Windows 7 or maybe even all the way down to Windows XP. You usually won't have to go below Windows Vista.

Whatever you do next though, do one thing at a time, and "test". If it takes three hours for each "test", all the better - just have fun with it.
