Default Hole in the enemy ship question?

I was recently in a mission and put 2 large holes in the hull of a BB, I had to dive for cover but I watched on free camera.

I followed the BB with the camera, the sea was choppy so it was swaying/rocking side to side.
One hole was partly under the water the other went under as the ship rocked, I thought surely she is taking in water and would start to sink, but it sailed on forever, I gave up watching in the end.

Was it because it was a BB and they are not meant to sink with just 2 torpedoes?

Col.

Col,

don't you love the holes. i do. i love surfacing and taking a few whacks at a merchie with a deck gun just to see the holes.

ok, back to your questions.......
you don't say what your mod set is because some mod sets treat damage differently than others.
that being said, yes, a BB will have more compartments and more damage points available to it to stay afloat.

and yes, with eighteen or twenty compartments (damage zones) and probably 800 or 900 damage points, it will take more than two US fish to sink. i believe six is the most common number of torpedo hits and the more spread out the better.

as far as the sailing off is concerned, in Stock and several other mod sets that use the same damage model, it is not unknown for a sinking ship to remain underway as it sinks. so, sailing off with just two hits is not extraordinary behavior for a BB. they do that a lot.
as indicated above, it will take several hits to sink a capital ship. someone has posted a chart of the number of torpedoes it "should" take to sink the various classes of ships. i do not have that at my finger tips but you can search the Downloads forum.

Hi Marco,

Yes I thought it was that, I have on occasion sank a BB with 4 torpedoes.

I have seen 1 or 2 other ships slowly sink after being holed, there have been times I fired another torpedo and while it was travelling to the target the ship sank so I wasted a torp lol.

Talking of BB's have you ever noticed on some convoys where there have been 2 or 3 in formation protected by DD's and the BB's have no guns, it kind of spoils it in a way?

Col.

The "holes" are just window dressing, and have nothing to do with a ship's damage at all. You might notice on some ships that there will be only 3 holes in its side, even though you had six impacts at six different locations. The "artist" of the holes only put three on the side of the ship though... Same with shell holes. Some ships will have no damage showing, yet sinking faster than a stone... Sinking (generally) is in the hit points, and flooding times of the boxes and spheres on a ship's zon file.

are you referring to IJN BB's or Allied BB's?

and, no...i have never experienced BB's w/o weapons.
in fact, i have been sunk from BB guns while already submerged. the indignity of it all..................

Relating to this topic I put 2 torpedoes in a merchant, she sank with her hull well below the water but wasn't dead.
There was no way in real life she would have carried on, but as you know if it isn't dead you get no credit even though it would never sail again and the crew would in real life abandon ship.
I had to put another torpedo in her then she blew up lol.

There's an an idea for a mod lol, points for heave damage and/or put out of action.
