Torpedoes running behind target.
Why, when using manual targeting, with a perfect 90 degree AOB shot set up, torpedoes set to fast, ship ID'd and ranged correctly, with correct speed calculated, do the torpedoes always run behind the target? Is this a known issue? I carried out the same attack with auto TDC on, it had the exact same readings as when I fired manually, but those torpedoes didn't miss 🙂

With manual targeting, how far from the target were you? Did you open the torpedo doors before firing?

Try a 20 degree lead set angle of bow -20 of 90,, TDC off

AOB maybe off or final bearing before firing is not correct. Are you using the position keeper?

Thanks for the help, guys, the extra bit of target lead was what was needed. I'll get the boffins back at base to recalibrate our TDC when we get home.

As you get more practiced at it, you'll also be able to figure out whether to lead or retard the aiming point on say a destroyer bearing down on you and swinging beam on side to side with good success. Good hunting!

I seem to be having a similar problem. If I actually get the torpedoes to go straight ahead, it's the exceptional case. I assume it's the speed/angle on bow that's off. |

Is this an April fools joke or are you winding us up?.
There are two missions in the SubmarineSchool folder, use them until you can torpedo a ship consistently, I would disable duds while you're practising your technique. SS03 Torpedo Attack SS04 Convoy Attack

The target practice in the game doesn't give you alot of time for setting up a salvo, but I did finally figure it out and my torpedoes now land consistently. Using sonar to finalize the range after setting the Position Keeper helped a great deal.
Something to consider: in order for the mast height from the Recognition Manual to be fed into the stadimeter, you have to have the periscope on a target. That wasn't immediately intuitive. If you don't do this, you just get a default mast height value (50 feet, I believe) without any warnings. The advice to turn off duds for practice is sound. With dud torpedoes, I've had whole salvos pass right under the ship without exploding. It seems the Mk 14's unreliability is historically accurate and doesn't pull any punches in how bad they were. Half the time, the torpedoes will just miss altogether or fail to explode (the Mk 10's on the S-Class subs are very good, on the other hand). |
