Win 7 until they pry it from my cold dead fingers here!

It's the last Windows that doesn't dumb down a computer to a cell phone. I have a cell phone. I like my computer better.

same here, thanks for the links, shocking stuff there and I think you are right, they want to make your computer like a cell phone now.

I have two computers with reservations to get win 10 but after seeing what its recording of my activity and storing at Microsoft for them to sell and use or get stolen by hackers, im not upgrading and im warning everyone I know not to either. I was going to wait to see if it had any operating issues first but now im not even caring "how" it works if its collecting data on me like that.

maybe if they undo all that stuff to make it secure I might give it a second look, but then if its just a tweaked version of 8 (which some say it is) then I don't want it anyway

I say give 'em six months to back off their Windows is Facebook kick and for the gurus to uncover everything we don't know about yet and to tell us how to defang it and it might be time to take another look at Windows 10.

UEFI bothers me a lot. This is a monopoly company trying to close the door on any competition, keeping them from installing on someone else's (our) set of hardware.

Microsoft got in big trouble for a lot less in the early 2000s and I think its time to point the blowtorch in their direction again. I look for Europe to do the heavy lifting on this one (as usual and that's depressing) as they did in opening the door for Chrome and Firefox to have equal status with Internet Exploder. Now Edge (have to come up with a derisive name for that) is doing much, much worse, while forcing Windows users to use a cell phone app for their Internet access. That's not cricket and I don't think we should tolerate bullying like that.

well in October is the full release so by January we should have lots of comments and solutions about stuff by then. right now with this "limited release" its just maybe half a million people so far, once 15 million start using it we will know better.

my brother is using it (after tweaks) and he says he likes it but he had windows 8 so he had nothing to lose by trying it.

Default Thanks, your fix worked!

...First, I noticed that on Silent Hunter 3, there was a check mark on "Disable display scaling on high DPI setting", which wasn't there on Silent Hunter 4...

I checked that box on properties of my shortcut and back in business!

Thanks Ensign!

My only change was that I had to run sh4.exe as admin.

I don't know where all these boxes are to check or uncheck.
I can't get any farther than the intros and then it goes to a completely black screen. I can't exit out of it or anything. Have to keep restarting my computer.
The frustrating thing is I bought the gold pack digital download off Amazon back in 2019 and loaded it on this same computer and except for a few minor display adjustments in the display section of the game everything was fine.
Now I'm trying to load it up again, Had to deleted it due to lack of hard drive space and wanting to try other things but every time I try to start the game it goes thru the intros and straight to a black screen.
I haven't changed anything on my laptop since it was last loaded.

Silent Hunter on the 'modern' computer and OS can be a bother, and is does not matter the source of the game, whether Amazon or Steam or Ubisoft, they ALL default to installing the game in the "C:\Program Files (x86) \..." folder. My Steam install is "C:\Program Files (x86) \Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific". My Ubisoft is "C:\Program Files (x86) \Ubisoft \Ubisoft Game Launcher \..." The Amazon install is probably similar, though I do not recall their specific install path. But those paths are where you find the "SH4.exe" file for changing the "Properties" of for High DPI Scaling, etc. spoken of by several of the posters here. The link that Rhodes gave you in the other thread (Running older games on Win10) is a really good find. Amazon's install would be similar. It is best if you install the game in a folder of your own creation, especially if you are going to add a mod to the game, since Windows will stop any changing of the files in a Program Files folder.

I would uninstall what you have again, then run the installer again, and when it shows the path it wants to install the game to (C:\Program Files (x86)...), just change that path to "C:\MyGames", or whatever name you want, so that you would not have Windows getting in your way. The Amazon app does make a short-cut, but it usually does not "point" to where you want, and changing the Properties gets rather involved with several "Find Target" moves in File Explorer. With this, all you need to do is open File Explorer, open your new MyGames folder, and start rooting through there, finding "SH4.exe", then set the "Properties" as described in other posts. You will have to experiment, since no two computers seem to handle things the same...

One more time: This thread is for people having problems getting SH4 to run on Windows 10. There are now two threads in the PC Software forum on the OS itself. Please stay on topic.

I have been away a long time so windows 10 and SH4 were new and might as well have been new to me. I installed SH4 and tried to run it with no success.

"Carp," I said to myself.

"I'll go to SUBSIM, those guys know everything," said I.

"Good idea," me replied.

Well...long story short, nothing helped. I probably got glossy eyed and went right by the answer. I then searched on the tubes...a lot of alchemy, but no straw to gold.

Out of frustration, I set the computer display to 1028x768 and ran SH4. It worked. I then set the in game graphics to 1920x1080 and it continued running. Huzzah. I exited the game and reset the computer display to 1920x1080 and restarted the game. It worked again. And again, and again...

I copied the game and renamed copy for future supermod and tried to run it with no joy. Carp. Then I did the same as the above paragraph and it worked like a charm.

If someone else figured this out and posted; disregard this post. If this helps someone else then my good deed is done and I don't have to drag some old lady across the street.

Default Windows 10 and SH4 w/mods

After using the above noted tip about ticking off the graphic box it worked for me. I am just leaving it at plain W10 compatibility as that works. To use UBM mod I did two things. One I used the JG thingy to load the mod but noticed that no files were in the single section etc. So I copied all the games to the single in the data section and they worked. Now I don't know the exact terminological but maybe you get my drift or someone can re-write this more technically.

Default Windows 10 and SH4 not working

Well I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 10, and I can't get SH4 to work. However, it was not on my computer to start with. I just bought the SH4 CD - so its all brand new. Clicked on all the recommended prompts as I installed it. When I hit the game application - nothing happens - can't get the game to play. Anyone got any suggestions? Not very computer savvy so go easy.

Hey guys,

I figured it out. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, but did not load up "Game Shadow" which came with the game, and which I loaded the first time. I didn't know what it was nor had I ever heard of it, but it sounded like something problematic - so I nixed it this second go around. I did make sure that "Disable display scaling on high DPI" and "Run program as game administrator" were both checked. I also, at the end of installing, checked the box that asked if I wanted to "Run the Game," which I also did not do the first time. SH4 started right up!! Hope that helps anyone having difficulties.

Best,
Alan
