Default Torpedos disappearing/firing range

I attacked a maru in my last patrol from just over 3000 yards. I looked at the torps on the attack map and watched them running toward the target. Then the torps suddenly disappeared from the attack map so i switched to free camera and nothing happened?

I thought the max range for the MK14 on high speed was 4500 and slow was 9000? Why did the torpedos disappear from the attack map and seemingly the water aswel. The target ship stayed on course. Using auto targetting by the way

I've never had disappearing torpedoes either in the vanilla game or any mod I've played, could it be a graphics problem?, a mod conflict?, a supernatural occurrence?, I'm just throwing things out there as this is one of the most strangest SH4 things I've ever heard of.

List what version of the game you're running and any mods as well, someone might know what is going on.

If you have "duds" enabled, there is the possibility of "pre-mature detonation", the bane of all torpedomen...

in my experience the only way to explain what happened is:
  • premature detonation (see PB's note)
  • duds, which are announced and which you say you have disarmed
  • max range has been reached
  • circle runner that missed you
  • misses, which are also announced
