Default Map under red light?

I've noticed that in a number of GUI mods (OLC and MaGui), the navigation map, periscope, and other stations no longer appear under red light at night, like they do in the vanilla game. I'm wondering, is there a historical reason for this or is just to make the maps easier to read?

The red lights do not make things easier to read, but it does allow you to see better (adapt from light to dark) if you have to go topside at night.

Oh, that part I understand. What I mean is, several of the interface mods seem to purposely remove the red light effect when looking at the map, periscope and some other stations (yes, even at nighttime when the rest of the boat is under red light). I'm wondering if they removed it for purposes of historical accuracy.

For example, in the vanilla game, the map under red light looks like this:

But using MaGui, it looks like this:

And OLC's GUI is the same regular lighting with just a moon icon in the upper right.

MaGUI has several different night map filters as an option.

Thanks, I just discovered ARB Widescreen GUI and it also has a dimmer "night light" for the map, but not red light. The periscopes look the same day or night. Guess it's too technically difficult to have the new GUI plus the old red light filter or something.

1. Have you carefully read all the messages in this thread?

2. Have you installed HotFix v0.3.1 for ARB?

3. Have you seen DGUI?

Yes, sorry, I did see your message about the options in MaGui. But I just discovered ARB and prefer that interface to MaGui and DGUI. How were you able to get the red light filter in ARB? By default, it has a slightly dimmed normal, not red, light. Did you combine two different mods?

You're right. That's the file. I saw another mod targeting the same file and figured out if I save the vanilla Night_filter.tga, then make it into my own mod and load it last, it is used on the map and periscope screens (as in my attachment below). Now if only we could get it working on the attack map but if I recall correctly, the attack map does not use a filter even in vanilla.
