Default 19 1/2 hours

TMO 2.5 w custom mods.
100 difficulty, no cam. map contacts on
May 1942
USS Drum SS-228 First War Patrol

Acting on ULTRA and contact reports, went off Bungo Suido in May 42 to catch "WOUNDED BEAR" aka Shokaku returning from Coral Sea.

Long story short...made contact and had great set up plane spotted us and ruined it, and two DD's rushed in searching. After first two runs they seemed to not have great contact but would not go away. After four hours was at 375 feet and needed to sleep, felt was mostly safe so took chance, left things on Silent Running and went to bed. This morning woke up, DD's still in area estimated 3000 yards hunting. That was roughly 6 1/2 hours in addition to the for hours I spent evading prior evening.

Went to the office, got home and checked on game, DD's still hunting in area, est 5000-8000 yards. Heard depth charges dropping. They are still hunting. I assume it is same ones, sounds like two DD's and not patrol craft or anything called in to the scene.

I changed course and it seemed to attract one of them as he came sweeping in a few light pings, no solid contact, dropping some charges and hunting in area I was for about 30 minutes. I slowly slipped away problem was had now been submerged since previous day, Co2 as building, and battery power dwindling.

Finally, lost contact. Roughly 19 1/2 hours after attack began. Pretty rare in this sim, much as in real life escorts usually give up too soon. Just wonder what causes this variation lol.

Default No Drum...

Since I think it's an interesting story, I'd like to do your mission "went off Bungo Suido in May 42 to catch "WOUNDED BEAR"" too. Not that it's very important I guess, but how come I don't see your boat, the USS Drum SS-228, on my list of boats?

Not sure. Drum should be on the list.

In the Stock game, Drum is the first Gato boat listed... In FotRSU, we have it at Unit 11. I forget where it is in TMO, but I am almost 100% certain it's in there... maybe...

Default Ships name...

I think you are right....
The first boat offered is indeed a Gato! But I thought "Drum" was also a type. Now I understand that "Gato" is a type and "Drum" will be the name of one of the many boats of the Gato type.

However, if someone chose the Gato type, how did Bubblehead1980 find the ship's name "Drum" somewhere. So, where do I find a ship's name?

Nope, the Drum SS-228 is a Gato Class boat(Now a museum in Mobile, AL) and was actually commissioned before the lead boat of the Gato Class (Gato SS-212) and Drum is the oldest surviving US WW II submarine.

The link above is for the "Select Your Sub" mod I created for TMO. The README included in download explains how to select a specific boat.
