Yes, the more you get into looking for informantion, the more there is to learn. There are lots of sites that give information regarding ship information/pictures from the past. As Max found, his site is a ship modeling site that provides ideas for ship configurations. There are several authentic U.S. ONI manuals found on the internet too (their the real life Recognition Manuals mariners used for identification). You don't have to be 100% accurate with your naming, just a bit more consistent than "Small this", or "Big Fat that".

The idea of knowing what the ship in-game looks like is important. Years ago I made a notebook for my own use of images of the ships in-game. I used it a lot when I was trying to identify specific differences between ship types. Yes there's a lot of ships now......but as I said, the stock game already has named a lot of the freighters for you (that's all TMO did....use the stock UnitName's name as its "given" name, and put a "Maru" with it).

Yes that would be awesome for realism and if could be scripted in dates mentioned on delegates being evacuated / transferred.
On a nother note what would be said renown lost for sinking these ships???
I sometimes like to go on a drunken rough rage straight to the brig.........

My screenies are 1920x1080, in BMP format
I can resize, and also re-save in a different format if it will make it easier for you

I have Photoshop, so this is no trouble, I can just set up an action and auto-batch process the lot of them

Let me know what is convenient for you

1920x1080 will work just fine. Instead of bmps, why not make them jpg, if nothing else it will save space because the file sizes aren't so big.

Done mate
I have put the file in the WIP section
Called FOTRSU Merchant Screenies

Have named each screenshot with the name that appears in the Rec Manual and Museum

If anyone else wants to take a look please feel free - it will give you some idea of the massive variety of targets we now have on offer

OK - with a little bit of experimentation I have come up with the following

A meatball flag on the side of the early civ skin

I love this too much not to use it where I can

Two flavours of hospital ship for the troop transports

This is going to work on some models but not on others.
I am limited by where the game decides to put the cross - I cannot control that! (Without 3D software and a bunch of knowhow!)

But on ships where it works, I reckon these two extra skins for the troop transports will give us a bit more variety.
And as they are only two skins out of a possible twelve, you should not see them too often

Probably not
I have a feeling I was clicking on the section of the website that dealt with ships dedicated to landing assaults!
Plus you have to remember - these may be as they were at the end of the war
At the start of the war they may have been much more lightly armed

Disclaimer - this is a wild assed guess. I have no concrete info to back up these assertions

Would the hospital ships be armed? Maybe they had guns for self defence? Just curious how those ships were on the war. I know shooting them was a no-no.
Could you mark them as friendly then skin them Japanese so that you'd lose renown?

I still can't figure out why I can't get the Museum to run on my bigger computer, yet it runs on the little dual-core with one fourth the memory... Oh well. computers. In the meantime, after much head scratching, re-doing mods, while still having graphic issues, and just about giving up and re-installing the game, I finally figured out what's wrong with my big computer... In an effort to get the Museum to run on this computer, I had set ALL graphics settings to the lowest they had ('cept Gamma, of course). This included the "Texture Quality High" check box. When a person clicks on the "Low", "Medium", "High" or "Custom" graphics drop-down, that does not change the "Texture Quality High" state. The user has to click on it. Presto magico, and I now have "normal" looking smoke once again. I'll figure this stuff out eventually...

In the meantime james_nix, according to a couple of sources:

"Although all hospital ships were marked clearly and carried no armament, they were attacked in some instances."

All sides were guilty of attacks, some accidental, some purposeful, but the hospital ships weren't supposed to be armed, and could be boarded at any time by any belligerent for inspection - "What? Me ~cheat~? Why, that's *preposterous* sir!"...

@ max-peck: you sir, are a dynamo! I was just admiring your v5 dazzle, as I was putting holes in a few merchants... Good stuff. I really like some of those little touches, like the tarps, or ventilation horns that are a contrasting color, such as red. Cool beans.

@ cdrsubron7: any "advice" on the AI levels versus Single Mission "crew efficiency" (poor, competent, veteran, elite) on the specific ships? What I'm getting at is, what are we looking for, if anything? Just oddball behavior, ie: we don't want anything like PT-73, with Ensign Parker in charge, and just a bit daffy? We don't want 'em completely just wandering off?... I'm going to make me an SM with 4 or more DDs, each set to a different level, and see how they respond to a "cavitating" submarine at various depths... maybe even pop up top on a couple rounds... - this AI stuff also involves the Merchant fleets, correct? Since you're into the sim.cfg file, that effects airplanes too, correct... I hates mee aeroplanes-ez and destroyers-ez...
