Pretty self-explanatory, really. To escape, a u-boot dives deep, hence the name. I thought it sounded nice and aptly "submarine".

Mittelwaechter is German Navy slang.

A coffee and snack or a simple meal at midnight for the watch on duty (dog watch).

I wanted something slightly humorous with a German lilt, so misspelt the great '70s cartoon Hair Bear Bunch (Help!... It's the).

I must say I'm disappointed in Jim for not admitting to his Chicken Bhuna addiction, we all love a good curry!

I got the nickname when I started skydiving when I was 17. At my local dropzone nobody went by their real name, we all went by nicknames.
One night we were sitting in the bar, drunk, and somebody found Czech-Russian dictionary.
It was originally Konus (or конус in Russian) which is an exact translation of my last name. It stuck for a little bit but then one of the other guys (an astrologist) told me that there was a Conus nebula so it was later changed to Conus.

00= year 2000. The year I moved to the United States.

Wow...talk about a thread rising from the dead. Last seen 11/2006 and raised on 6/2010.

Neat though. I've never seen it and it is interesting to see some of the reasoning behind some of the names.

As far as my name goes:
Well, I was swimming one night and I felt this bump and a sharp pain in my leg.......well, ok....maybe not.

I play online poker occasionally. In the food chain of poker players, there are sharks and there are the little fishes that get eaten by the sharks at the tables.

Every once in a while, I become the hunted instead of the hunter and I get bit by the sharks.

Fido is a shortened version of my early flightsim nick CFSFIDO. In real life if flew a Piper Cub for fun, but always wanted to fly a Spitfire or F-86 Sabre, so in Flight Sims my dreams came true. I was a member of an on line squadron of F-86D pilots, the aircraft was sometimes known as a SabreDog, so we all had canine related nicks.("Fido" is a common name for a pet dog) in case you are from out of town. Over time I just dropped the CFS and started using Fido. As a subsimmer Fido has a different meaning, it refers to a Mark 24 passive acoustic anti-Submarine torpedo from WWII, so it still fits, well sort of.

Actually a good zombie thread!

I chose mine way back when I made my first ever online name and it always has been gordonmull for everything. My first name followed by the name of the island I grew up on, so that any other online teuchters might know they're seeing another one out there

h.sie are parts of my real name. later, after choosing this name, i found out, that if you pronounce it in one word, it sounds like "hasi" in german, which means "rabbit" and is not funny.

Should we start referring to you as 'Bugs ' (bunny) then?

Obltn because SHIII hunter doesn't promote one easily to kapitänleutnant which pissed me at the time.

Strand comes from my last name which really translates roughly as shore-like.

'Bugs' is an adequate nickname since programming is part of my job.
