Does this one look familiar?

Found her about halfway through the Tsugaru Kaikyo (if I've got the name correct) while I'm headed Westbound for the Sea of Japan, and they're headed outbound for home. There were three Japanese flagged ships like this with her:

The date is supposed to be March 28th, 1942. No escort nearby, but there was a small patrol vessel that came to their "rescue" about an hour later. Somehow or another, they tracked me down, dropped two ashcans, which took out my deck gun (uh... I have a question: How do they know that?... we're at 195 right now), damaged a propeller shaft, took out the two electric motors, and one of the diesel engines... yet no flooding, no injuries... but my main question is, how'd they even ~FIND~ me?... drove straight to me too, small profile, silent running, below thermal layer and all. The vessel isn't even as big as a tugboat, and has super ears. I saved last night, dead in the water on the bottom at 250, facing East to try and depart as soon as an electric motor comes on line, if it does... BIG problem, the game won't load the save this morning. It is not a big file. This is the 3rd patrol, first two patrols completed "safely", and returned to base (no loss of life, but plenty of damage both trips - deck gun lost both times also, btw). No ships sunk to my record, until this trip, with now four, three of the four merchants for a total of about 22k, and the patrol craft, who got his comeuppance... Now, if I could just get back in to the game...

At least I have a little solace in my temporary condition, and plenty of company down here now...

One of the three down here with me... - that's after a third torpedo hit, btw, and it took almost an hour total for them to go down, but only about 12-15 minutes after this, which is about 8 minutes after the torpedo impact. The thermal layer right here is at about 95 feet (??).

So I'd say CapnScurvy has a point, but if the conflict is with fleets not likely to be encountered, a Maru name would slide by undetected.
Just for the heck of it late last night I added the maru names to the Names cfg in another version of 0.1 Beta. I started a new career starting from Pearl on Dec 9th. Assigned to patrol area SE of Tokyo Bay. Wouldn't you know that the first two ships I encounter , one of them is a is German. An Old Medium Freighter the letters on the side of the hull Hamburg Line stenciled on the side of the hull and a German flag flying from the stern. The only problem was it had a Maru name to it. Maddy seems to have scripted many German merchants sailing in tandem with Japanese merchants in the mission files. That makes it difficult to go with the Maru naming scheme.

I'm not going to give up on this though. I'm going to continue to play around with it and see if I can get it to work. Is this where the 010 Hex Editor would come into play?

That's what I ran into last night cdrsubron7. A German-flagged merchant, identical to its companions.

I just went into the ME and going off the Roster list from the different countries, these are the number of ships that cross over for each country.

American - 9
Australia - 5
British - 11
France - 2
Germany - 10
India - 3
Netherlands - 3
New Zealand - 3
Russia - 3

Sigh!....Maybe this naming scheme isn't going to work.

Hi Cdrsubron7,

Here is my ship cfg i am currently working on from stock, this is still a WIP and i will eventually have this ready for personal use on all mod setups.

The one thing I have found is that if you use a long ship name it causes problems when viewing ships via periscopes, as it copies the ship distance into the end of the ship names on the little notepad on the top right.

If there's anything you want to use or copy feel free to cut and paste to your hearts desire..

A MARU name should only be used for the Japanese....period. Any other nationality using the same ship, the name will be generic.

That's the German side of play, the American side has the name placed in the Position Keeper. As you pointed out, long names won't fit. Neither will they in the Recognition Manual.

Thank you very much for your kind offer, s7rikeback. The problem I'm running into is that there is currently 37 types of merchants modeled in FOTRSU. And many of the ships are used for the different countries merchant rosters. A German merchant with a Japanese maru name just won't fly and I see no easy way around this. The normal Maru names such as Horai, Buyzun, Nippon, and all the others have been changes also in FOTRSU. Hence my delimma.

Yeah, looking at my list, i only have roughly 4 to 5 IJN merchants that share rosters and i've pulled them from the allied rosters to preserve the IJN merchant Maru names.

However i am also looking at making copies of these ships and just creating a generic Kimposan Transport type for allied rosters, to keep the numbers up for eye candy...

But i'm not sure if this is along way round the problem or even where to start...

example 1 - Kimposan Maru-class Transport - Japan Roster
example 1 - KM-class Transport - Allied Roster

hi sorry again for The intrusion but is possible to add the italian roster in the mod? historically there were various italian merchant ships in The Pacific Ocean and there was The italian Aux cruiser RAMB IV (that is very similar than your NACA3 ship's type)
and an other thing, is possible to add in the german campaign a playable Aux. cruiser or a destroyer like the Asashio please?

Cdrsubron7,

I have just tested my theory using:
  • Clean install of SH4 1.4 & 1.5
  • Installed FotRS 1.3 for Sh4 v1.5 plus v2 Sounds mod via JSGME.
  • Copied the files NOM_Buzyun from the sea folder and also the roster files to my desktop.
  • Renamed the desktop / Data / Sea / NOM_Buzyun folder to NOM_BuzyunA.
  • Then renamed the desktop / Data / Sea / NOM_BuzyunA / NOM_Buzyun.cfg file to NOM_BuzyunA.cfg.
  • Opened the desktop / Data / Sea / NOM_BuzyunA / BuzyunA.cfg to change the class name to OMBuzyunA.
  • I then cleaned out the desktop / Data / Sea / NOM_BuzyunA folder just leaving the NOM_BuzyunA.cfg. - As all instructions from this ship copy still points to the original folder in Data / Sea / NOM_Buzyun.
Found this out, by sorting out the Air folders in the Stock versions with different US Aircraft calling the same folder for their data & skins.
  • Lastly renamed the Desktop / Data / Roster / Japan / cfg to NOM_BuzyunA, and moved the new cfg from Japan to British.
Then created a JSGME version of the new ship and loaded it via JSGME

I then entered the copied ship to the names.config along side the original
OMBuzyun=Buzyun Maru-class naval oiler
OMBuzyunA=BM-class Naval Oiler

I loaded up my new SH4 and received my Museum ticket and I now have both ships showing with same paint schemes but with both Japan & British flags showing correctly alongside their newly added ship names in the selected roster.

it's a bit long winded and not sure if it's something that helps your dilemma at all, but it gives you a lot more ships in game.

Here are the files I was working with:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/e9tcqduwa...PNDiDAjCa?dl=0

But it may effect Max-Peck's brilliant work with the merchant vessels, and not sure if the copy will show in game without scripting?!?!

Something else to learn now...

Fine work, s7rikeback! I'll bet you're right about the campaign files not using the new ship unless.... It's not exactly my bailiwick and I'm not expert in this nook of the game.

As far as Italian ships and playable DDs, I think those would become Plugin Mods. Again, we can make the Italian Ships but will the game use them without additional scripting? When we imported FOTRS 2.0 ships we also imported their scripting so the game worked.

Interesting stuff, s7trikback. Thanks for sharing.

My problem is basically this. There are 37 merchant ships already ingame in FOTRSU. 19 of the merchants ships are used for the other nations ships ingame. Changing the ship names in the Names.cfg files also make those names show up in the nationalities folders with Japanese maru names. I encountered a German medium freighter last night that was named Akagi Maru. Doesn't sound right does it. This basically is what I'm facing.

Very interesting work s7rikeback. ... and while I'm off researching, there's Rockin Robbins on the reply , saying what I was thinking, that a mod would be really cool to do, and that you (s7rikeback) and Kapitain Oliver Leinkraunt could get together and create such an "FotRS Ultimate Approved" campaign mod - with some cdrsubron7 research and Single Mission files to go along with it ... and cdrsubron7 beats me even...

I've got some questions for all you fellow crash-test-dummies... How many of you have had a corrupted save for a campaign? That's all I can figure happened during my third patrol from Pearl. I cannot get it to open. All the files look to be a normal size, and I ended the previous two patrols upon re-entering port. I didn't even have any ships sunk on those two patrols, and I get three ships & a patrol craft within a three hour time span, and now I can't get it back... so sad.

Also, after doing the necessary moves to get into position for a target solution, and deciding when I'm going to shoot, I'll watch the sonar traces to decide when to pop above the thermal layer, raise the scope and fire, and then (usually) get ready to head back down below the thermal. That's been getting a bit erratic, and "jumpy", to where the sonar trace is at 330, 329, 328, 328, 328 - making me worry they've turned - and then all of a sudden, 355, and I've basically got to really rush things now, or choose a different target... anyone else? This is in the campaign. It does not seem to do that in the Single Missions. I've not given it much attention in the couple-three Quick Patrols I've done...

All of this is on my quad-core with 8gig of ram, LAA enabled, etc...

cdrsubron7 - just to let you know, I'm *still* trying to get into that harbor at Attu... I'm thinking of taking the guards out, and just see what happens...

Fair enough mate.

This is way i fixed my same problem with my shipnames. So i made a copy of each of the 5 ships while watching the olympics.

Kept the original IJN ships within the IJN roster.

The 5 new ship copies were then used to replace the original IJN ships with my new shortened name theory in the roster files..

Original Ship still in IJN Roster: OMBuzyun=Buzyun Maru-class naval oiler

New ship created for other nations Roster : OMBuzyunA=BM-class Naval Oiler

I used the A prefix to remind me it's a copy of the original.
I Initialed the original IJN Class name to [ BM - Class - type ] as above.

So now i have 5 extra ships in my game to fix the cross roster problem i faced.

While keeping all IJN names with IJN roster and the 5 copies now running around with the new shortened names.

Hope it all makes sense,

Regards,
s7rikeback.
