It came with a shiny Staff Car and a plastic replica of the Wewelsburg castle.

Any duth viewers noticed how crappy the dutch subtitles are. I know a little german. I think they made the subtitels out of the english translation.

Also, I recall the Chief spending a lot more time in the battery compartment, with the fumes really hurting his eyes, and the bravery it took to go back in there.

So I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "full" version, just shorter and longer cuts with different variations of the million+ feet of film they shot.

I wasn't very happy with the print quality of the "uncut" version either.
I don't recall the scenes you describe, but the shortest (theatrical) version is the only one which has the Chief say to Lt. Werner "And here comes the speech", and after the Captain says "Now men, all clear?" the Chief says "Some speech, huh?"

That sequence is not in any of the longer versions, and I'm still wondering why.

Very observant. It's not on the director's cut or the full length Uncut release. I think it's apparent we've watched this fine film too many times. Err wait, no...no, I don't think that's possible. Actually, I don't think I'll ever tire of this film.

I've seen it a couple of times but not recently. You guys talking about it in this thread has made me buy the uncut version(hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow).

When it does I'll be away for a while..........

If you enjoyed the movie in one of it's shorter versions, you'll appreciate the longer version, trust me. Good stuff.

You're going to love it. I have both the director's cut and the uncut version. The long version definately adds a lot to the story.

I love nitpicking through the versions of films that one prefers. Its really astounding how some scenes that are removed add so much character. Like for christmas I got the complete Apocalypse Now with all the deleted scenes and the Redux version. Its amazing what interesting stuff isn't included. Like theres this special feature of a full 17 minutes of Marlon Brando in Colonel Kurtz's character reading The Hollow Men. You get into a trance listening to that.

Yes well what an all time classic, sheer brilliance from Wolfgang Petersen. I have the mini series, this is the full version, the directors cut is great of course but i beleive their is 25mins missing when u-96 becomes stuck on the bottom of the Gibraltar straits....worth watching as the intensity just flows for almost half an hour!
Heres to Thompsen!!!!

Thanks, but I can't claim it. There have been Das Boot threads here at Subsim ever since I've been here (and that's going on five years now), and this was actually brought up by someone else a long time ago.

Sailor Steve,

I have a copy of the theatrical release and always wondered why that scene about the speech was not included in the long version. It does add to the character development between both Werner and the IL. They seem to have developed a repoire with each other before the bar scene.

Good Hunting,
FUBAR
