I just finished my first two patrols of my u-boat commander "gunther knapps" in the Med.
Patrol #1 My first command from the port of Salamis, my boat looking beautiful as the day she was commisioned. My crew, the bilge rats they are, seem to be excited and estatic of the adventures that await them. BUT ONLY IF THEY KNEW... After we set off from Salamis i went to my captains quarters to get the orders i had recieved from BDU, when i opened them i was nervous but relieved. My orders from BDU were to move to sector CO42 and to patrol for 24 hours, After reading i gave the orders to my crew and it was like a well oiled machine watching the men run to and frow to complete what has been asked of them. Now 30 hours after getting the orders to patrol CO42 we have finally made it to our sector and the game of cat and mouse is on, but coincidentally after 24 hours of patrolling nothing showed up. So we strapped ourselves up by our bootstraps and turned for home, after the 30 or so hours back to Salamis i went to my commanding officers office to get chewed out for bringing all the eels back home and not leaving them with the enemy. After a long stern chewing out i was told i only have the night to get some R&R before me and the crew needed to be back out on the open sea. Patrol #2 The crew and I find ourselves back in the ever restless creaking hull of our beloved boat, I tell the men to secure the last of the food and misc items they've brought on board, as we must be heading out on our mission. as we leave Salamis for the second time not knowing if we will make it back to see it again i once again squeeze my way to my quarters for my orders from BDU, as i open them i run my eyes across what seems to be my cursed patrol sector CO42 once again. "why" i think as i recall the last patrol where we saw more seaguls than enemy vessals, But BDU seems to know best so the crew and i head off to CO42 with despair in our hearts. We finally make it to patrol sector CO42 just before dusk on our second day of our patrol and everything seems to be all in order when out of no where i hear "ALARM ALARM PLANE AT BEARING 270" I shutter as i know planes can easially destroy this boat i order " CRASH DIVE" and the whole crew starts running to the bow of the boat in hopes we dive quicker. I can hear the planes engines roaring as the last of the men slide down the conning tower ladder, just as the hatch is closed two hawker hurricanes unleash lead onto us and i hear "ping....THUD.... BOOM" the crew is violently thrown across the room, "depth charge" i say to the startled men looking faintly at me their commander as i stand feeling the same feelings the men are but i must not let them know that. I order to maintain depth at 45 meters for a few hours to hopefully deter any more little wasps coming to get us. Around 3-5 hours later we surface after getting no hydrophone contacts and not seeing anything through the periscope, and we continue on our patrol. eventually we complete our orders and head for home, But on our way back to Salamis we spot a small merchant ship about 150 KM south of port and we move in to claim our first kill of our career. we move in about a KM and a half away from the small greek merchant (ps its 1941 in the career) and we input all the information into the TDC. I take one last look over the inputs, "LOS" i shout as the torpedo races out of the tube. Fast, straight, and accurate i say and i watch the torpedo from the wake of bubbles it leaves on the top of the water as it tracks towards the greek merchant, "15 seconds" my first officer says as he times the torpedo. "20 seconds" "30 seconds" my first officer says, i stand at the periscope dreading each second that passes i dont see the merchant explode, "FUBOOM" i look back into the periscope and see a huge giazer of water and fire erupt from the hull of the small merchant as i yell "WEVE GOT HER BOYS, WEVE GOT HER!" The crew lively after marking this poor ship for death as she slowly sinks, i order the boat to slow ahead as we watch the ship sink to the depths. After our first sinking on a enemy ship we return to our original course back to the port of Salamis, we make port later that day to a band, our commanders, and our beloved families. ![]() I thought this would be a funny or good read for any readers out there i just finished my first two patrols and figured why not make a short story for the first sinking, i hope a few of you will enjoy Have a great night and Happy hunting! ![]() Last edited by Flex02; 05-16-25 at 02:30 PM. |
