First maiden voyage for this U-boat. A lucky photographer managed to take a shot before the U-boat vanished into sea.

The Navigation Officer had been studying optical physics at Gottingen university before being called up one year into his studies. He managed to improvise a high power telephoto lens with a spare pair of binoculars and his cheap and nasty kodak camera.

The name of the ship was airbrushed out for reasons of sensitivity. There were no survivors due to the cold waters north of Shetland in February.

This was on the U-boat's third war patrol, early 1940.
