A few of us in this thread have posted songs by the Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah) Band; there was one person in the Bonzos who is a genius songwriter/parodist whose credits extend through the Bonzos, on to Monty Python, and on to some of the most memorable musical parodies of the past few decades, most notably The Rutles, a send-up of the career of The Beatles. The person referred to is Neil Innes. He was one of the chief songwriters for the Bonzos, the Pythons, and, along with Eric Idle, a main creator of The Rutles...
The Beatles, themselves, were huge fans of the various projects Innes engaged in, starting with the Bonzos. The only major hit the Bonzos ever had was a song written by Innes and produced by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym, Apollo C. Vermouth: Bonzo Dog Band - I'm The Urban Spaceman: Promo Film - 1968 BBC - 1968 This was a bit of filler by Innes on one of the Bonzo's albums, but has long been a favorite of mine; besides, how many other solo neo-classical harpsichord numbers on a pop or rock album can you name?: Bonzo Dog Band - Music For The Head Ballet After the Bonzos broke up, Innes went on to work with Monty Python, contributing many musical pieces to the program; Innes and Douglas Adams ("The Hitchhiker's Guide..") are the only two members of the extended Python group to receive individual credit for their works. George Harrison was a huge fan of the Pythons and financed, as a producer, a couple of their films and other projects. Here is George with Innes in a scene from an Eric Idle program: Neil Innes and George Harrison - Pirate Song Perhaps the most audacious parody of a major musical artist or group was the parody film "The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash", created by Innes and Eric Idle. The film was a flat-out parody of The Beatles and their career, with Innes playing the 'Lennon' part and Idle playing the 'McCartney' role. The film was given backing by Harrison and George even appears in the film as the character of a TV reporter doing an interview. Innes was responsible for the bulk of the songs and got the tone and sound of The Beatles down cold... The Rutles - Hold My Hand The Rutles - Love Life The Rutles - Get Up & Go Innes has continued over the years to create musical gems; here is another favorite: Neil Innes - Blue Suede Schubert Innes is one of those musicians who fall in the class of the "best musicians you never heard of"... <O>

One of the many great things about music is finding new and emerging musicians, artists and talent. Music constantly grows, evolves and continually finds new ways of musical expression. Hopefully, this trend will continue and music will again become the art form it once was and real musicianship can once again take center stage. Music today, if one can call it that, resembles little more than a lounge act at a 2nd rate hotel. If you need dancers in your ensemble, then there is something wrong.
Women in rock are well established but pale in comparison, relative to the sheer numbers of their male counterparts. It's always great to see women rock out and if they can shred a guitar-even better. Zepparella - When The Levee Breaks This is the best cover I have ever heard of this Led Zepplein song Desiree Bassett was about 15 when first discovered Desiree' Bassett - Layla ( not the greatest audio but her talent is apparent ) Sammy Hagar introduces Desiree' Bassett-History In The Making Desiree Bassett and Fran Cosmo - Peace of Mind - Boston Why - Joe Satriani (Cover By Desiree' Bassett) Desiree' Bassett - Live -'Cause We Ended As Lovers ~enjoy~ Last edited by Commander Wallace; 08-25-16 at 08:15 PM. |
