I have done this before and the response?

It might be fun to barrage such a person with questions.

"Who's that you're talking to?"
"What did he say?"
"What did you just say?" (when they're texting)

If you know the person he's talking to then you can start giving questions or comments for him to retransmit: "That's John you're talking to? Tell him to give me a call tomorrow".
