I played SH5 a bit. Liked it. Got a little frustrated then bought, after reading stuff here, SH3 with GWX which I had never tried (GWX, I mean).
The short version is that I quite liked some things in SH5, not to mention the visuals. I really like the depth, detail, etc of SH3/GWX. I never tried any mods in SH5. My question is, which should I be playing? |

You'll get no end of opinions on this; many of them pretty harsh and nasty. My advice would be to try both. SH3 is pretty cheap now, and comes bundled with SH2. Then you can make your own call.
![]() For the record, I disagree with Shiplord's assessment of the game. |

Aces Of The Deep is aces. Everything since is garbage.

See how easy opinions are, and how useless? Which one should you play? Only you can answer that question, and only if you try all three. The bottom line is that the best is the one that suits you, and no one can do that for you. Since you already have SH3 it should be easy for you to find out. ![]()

And you helped a lot to make SH5 better. UHS was and still is one of the most important mod for SH5, combined with IRAI is like patch 1.3. ![]() |

If you're looking for a U-Boat war simulation, SH3+GWX is the way to go.
![]() Now if you're looking for a Type VII simulator, SH5 is the best choice! ![]() |

Yeah I can't wait till we actually get some submarine choice in SH5... the VII is okay but I'd rather have a bit of freedom of choice. Back when I used to play SH3 I used to always use the IX, plus the ability to start out in that lil type II and work your way up was just fun.

I feel the same way about SH4, especially since it already has many of the improvements that SH5 has, but is compatible with work that has been done on SH3. Of course SH5 has added even more, but still lacks what some of us desire. Quote:
But why would I hide out somewhere else, and why would I be jealous? That's a pretty condescending thing to say, especially to people who support all subsims. Until SH5 can be made to do the things it should have done out of the box, there's nothing to be jealous of.

I wasn't being specific to anyone, sorry. I understand your point, but after all the beatings SH5 has taken here at subsim its nice to see where it stands after a year. Its quite impressive what the community has done and makes it my logical recommendation to any new subsimmer.

And I agree. My reasons for being certain I won't enjoy it anytime soon aside, I think everyone without my compunctions should get it and at least find out for themselves if they like it or not.
I also still have high hopes that eventually it will truly surpass everything that's gone before, and have no argument with anyone who believes it already has. ![]()

![]() edit: When SH5 can: - Have a fully rendered Type 9 AND render more crewman then vanilla. - Have a full KM grid - allow you to actually touch the damn bottom When SH5 can do all that, let me know will ya? Last edited by Ducimus; 03-28-11 at 10:19 PM. |
