SH5 or SH3 GWX?
 
I played SH5 a bit. Liked it. Got a little frustrated then bought, after reading stuff here, SH3 with GWX which I had never tried (GWX, I mean).

The short version is that I quite liked some things in SH5, not to mention the visuals. I really like the depth, detail, etc of SH3/GWX. I never tried any mods in SH5.

My question is, which should I be playing?

The SH5 changed a lot in meantime after the effort of all moders from here.. the SH5 with mods it is completly another game... and i will say to play SH5... if you not belive watch some videos to see how SH5 looks now:

p.s. the only thing that i not like on sh5 it is that we have not so manny ships and that is raining when is -40 degrees outside

You'll get no end of opinions on this; many of them pretty harsh and nasty. My advice would be to try both. SH3 is pretty cheap now, and comes bundled with SH2. Then you can make your own call. :up:

For the record, I disagree with Shiplord's assessment of the game.

SH5 isn't a post-Medieval2 Total war game, it is modable and a lot of its problems can be fixed.

Usually this is the point where I would go into a lengthy comparison, but what Tak said is the truth. It's all opinion. SH5 is newer and better, SH3 is more developed. SH5 is the future, but the future is still unfinished. SH3 is finished, but still being advanced. Nobody mentions SH4, which is somewhere in between and some think is the best.

See how easy opinions are, and how useless?

Which one should you play? Only you can answer that question, and only if you try all three. The bottom line is that the best is the one that suits you, and no one can do that for you. Since you already have SH3 it should be easy for you to find out. :sunny:

1 year ago, I would have said SH3 with GWX.

But now I find SH5 alot better than SH3 with GWX.
Why...
I find SH5 to be alot more realistic.
Being able to walk around the uboat,
the quality of the graphics.
The heavily modded AI (thanks to TheDarkWraith).
and i find the UI to be alot better (again thanks to TheDarkWraith for his Enhanced SH5 UI).
Even being able to interact with the crew (although this could do with alot of modding).

Sure SH5 is still missing a few things that GWX does better. for example :-
The campain has not been fully modded in SH5 yet.
You are restricted to just the type VII and its variants. uboats in SH5.
Merchant shipping, SH5 is lacking in the number of different merchant ships.

But you need to remember that SH3 Gwx has had alot more time spent modding it compaired to SH5. But SH5 is alot more modder friendly and in time the things that SH5 lacks will be added.

I play at 100% realism with real nav and realistic sound travel. I try to make the game as realistic as is possible.

I enjoy my SH5 and thanks to TDW and to all moders i think that is an playable game... i play realism 100%, real nav, etc... i try to put the immersivity at maximum in my SH5

This is not a tutorial - i made this video at the sugestion of Zedi and i wanted to share with you how i play my SH5 - most of time i do my calculation by visual and i try to use plotin as low as posible and also to not use my mouse and my keyboard... and belive me i have a lot of fun... somethimes i forget that i am in my room and i have the impresion that i am in an real UBAOT in the WWII time

Excellent, thats what Im talking about! :yeah: Voice command really makes you feel like your there and combined with real nav... its just crazy. Using voice command you dont need any UI, I use the "hide UI" option from TDW UI, so the screen is empty and clear, making the sim more immersive. Maybe its a bit scary and hard to use it at first time, especially for those who had the habit to click-a-lot in SH3, but worth to try it. Its a whole different game and gives you a strong "Im the captain" feeling.

This video show the power of SH5 after a year of hard work in moding it. Again, a BIG thanks to all moders who made SH5 best in the series. :salute: And thanks Stoian for making the video, it was always very hard for me to explain why to use voice command and how it feels and looks like.

So, I have installed the MO mod, with patch. It IS much better. I am having to save a lot as I occassionally crash (is that what CDT is?).

What should I do next?

I am in first patrol. 7.1K tons sent to the bottom!

Can't correlate any CDT with any action on my part except they happen in Nav view--but I spend a lot of time there...

it is a fix for the systems on 32 bits:

Here is something to try for those of you having CTDs or using 32 bit OS:

Try this only if you have at least 2 GByte of RAM and at your own risk and using Vista/Win7 32 bit version.
First download the explorer from http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
Next make a backup copy of SH5.exe. Then start "CFF Explorer" and open the orginal SH5.exe file.
Now go to NT Header/File Header and click File Header. There you will find a button labeld "click here". Click it and select the mark at "App can handle> 2gb adressest "
Save the modified EXE, overwrite the orginal one (You do have your backup of it in a safe location right?).
If you run Windows Vista 64 or Windows XP 64 or Win7 64 you're ready and didnt need to read on. The rest is only for Windows Vista 32/Win7 32 or maybe Windows XP.
Now make Windows Vista/Win7 (32-Bit) ready to support more than 2 GByte.
Open a command prompt with Administration rights. You find it under "Programs->Accessories->Command prompt" click right and select "run as administrator".
Enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 3072" (without quotes) in the command window and press enter.
After that restart windows

To reset back to 2GB limit:
to reset the Increased User Adressspace just start the commandline prompt with Admin right again and enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2048"

See if the above helps at all :yep:

Another idea is to install previous version of DirectX ( < v11). I have Win7 64bit but ALWAYS install previous DirectX versions for compatibility reasons. Go to Microsoft's website and search for DirectX. Run the DirectX web installer from their website. You can have DirectX9 AND DirectX11 installed on Win7.

just checked the sh5.exe file and it's large address aware so enabling the 3GB switch in 32bit OSs should help:

I couldn't imagine after playing years of GWX and one year of SH5, even considering recommending SH3 to anyone anymore. I hate to tell the SH3 fans around here but what SH5 and its community has done surpasses anything done with its predecessors. This is my opinion after following the modding done with SH3/4/5 for the last 5 years daily. If i was still on the fence about buying SH5 because of certain requirements and personal preference, I would be sooo sooo jealous of what the SH5 modding community does and would probably hide out in the SH3 and 4 forums :arrgh!:
