Wolfpacks were a capital issue during WW2, to a point where the "Atlantic Battle" can't be understood correctly without them. It was Doenitz's obsession to use them, and they really had a huge impact until May 1943. So obviously for any player with a taste for history and a will to replicate it, they are of enormous importance.

Nevertheless, the U-Boats fought in many theaters without forming wolfpacks (F.e. Mediterranean, Black Sea, early war phase, late war phase and long range patrols by Type 9 U-Boots) so you can still have a good amount of historical accurancy if avoiding the North Atlantic/1940-1943/TypeVIIC combo. So you certainly can have enough realism with SH3 in terms of historical accurancy. But you will not get the hugely important -and exciting- historic wolfpack campaign.

It is also good to note that real wolfpack tactics were not like they are depicted in the famous "Aces of the Deep" game (Which is more of a melee style), but more like a very disciplined combination of repeated attacks by various U-Boots, with special attention paid to coordination in order to allow them diverting the escorts in order for other U-boots to have a gap to get in and shoot at will.
Totally true. In fact the only reason the Wolfpacks failed was because the U-boat technology didn't keep up with ASW tech. Had there been XXIs or similarly advanced subs in 43 then they likely could have been able to continue the Wolfpack tactics.

The Wolfpack now that I think out it could be compared to guerilla warfare on the high seas. You have the clumbsy and large difficult to maneuver conventional force (the convoy) and then you have the hidden fighters that operate largely alone so that small numbers could attack from many sides and do huge damage in quick calculted attacks. Instead of attrition each torpedo was like one thrust of a dagger and the combined power of each thrust added up to the all too cliched death by a thousand cuts.

Having read about many brilliant and exiting wolfpack attacks I do wish I could enjoy even a pale version of it.

If they could just get AI torpedoes to work then it could be possible to orchestrate Wolfpack attacks. Sadly its the hardcoded nonsense that creates these barriers.

IIRC, the SHIV´s 1.1 patch will add torpedo bombers to the game. If they actually drop their torpedos, the modders can see how it is done in SHIV to get ideas for the SHIII.

I think SH3 will keep going, as there are some great mods (GWX, etc...) that have improved the game beyond all measure. The only thing that will kill it is a new Sub game in the Atlantic.

SH4 will replace SH1 and the subgame for the pacific. IT won't be perfect (what game ever is) , but mods will come avaible, which will boost the game's standing and playablity. The fact the dev's have said it will be easier to mod may encourage the mod's to come and try their hand at improving the game to a whole new level (AI Subs, Japanese subs and so on)

Both will reside on my computer, untill the day that SH5 replaces one of them!

Forget SH3? Nah, I'm just getting started with this game. Honestly I'm still in Naval Acadimy.
When the time comes I'll begin patrol #1. And that could be months from now...
I'll be playing for a long time...I think...:hmm:

Waiting my SHIV yet...

Probably goes same way than IL2 series, get Pacific Fighters when it came - install merged and play one career there. Then returned back to Eastern Front

So now you may ask why bother to bought it? Maybe I'm maniac... I have IL-2, IL-2FB, AEP, PF, IL-2FB+AEP+PF and IL-2 Sturmovik 1946

And now I'm back with SHIII with GWX and hooked

So my answer is no

I love SH3 and I also want to have/play SH4, I played Silent Hunter in the past. My first subsim was Wolfpack (atlantic theatre), then years later I found Silent Hunter (Pacific theater) and CAOTD, I only play CAOTD for a short time though. So I will buy SH 4 but I will keep SH 3 and play it cause I love WWII subsim.

I know the short "History Channel" version. Blah blah blah... day that will live in infamy... yadda yadda torpedoes dont work... blah ble blah blah... munitions people swear they do and that the entire Silent Service is just retarded (but not like Rainman cause he's actually good at numbers)... yadda yadda yadda... new guy takes over subs and fixes the issues and BINGO the Nips haven't a chance.

Not as... thrilling to me as the see saw battle of the Atlantic. If they'd had proper torpedoes at the start it wouldn't have been much of a war. There was the initial period where they had obsolete tactics and they had to kick out the jams.

I'm still an Atlantic obcessed boy. Not to minimize the Pacific's sumariners. They were excellent.
