Default GWX - What's Your Best Career So Far?

Hi Folks!
this one
I started on October 1939 so I could use an IXB. Heading out to sea on my 4th patrol I collided with a jetty getting out of dock because my crew was drunk. Repairs are done and I'm in the middle of my 5th patrol tthus far.

I unchecked realistic career length in SH3 Comm. and I'm trying to go the distance with this career. DiD of course. Right now it's summer of 1940 and I know it's going to get tougher.

What's been your best so far?

It would be cool to make all the way through '45 but I know this is unlikely...but I feel confident! Especially now that the crew is sober again.

Any long distance runners out there make it all the way?

Cheers

Well my brother managed to go coast to coast on the first Grey Wolves... I managed as far as 1942 in Base game.... Thus far... on GWX 1.03 I have reached mid 1941... most of my other careers have ended round about early 1941 as I just was too sloppy, but I think I learnt my lesson there.

I think the career length mainly depends on ...

1. your luck!!! (you won't survive if you're not lucky with air attacks)
2. the realism setting you use for the game
3. your general experience with sub sims
4. your mental and physical state (a drunk kaleun will never live long, except for Brag, maybe )

Well, I wasn't lucky enough so far. I always get killed by aircraft.
My longest career lasted till the end of 1941, where I was attacked by an aircraft and torn to pieces.
The really bad thing was that I was already returning to home port (less than 30 km to go).

My best career is the only one I'm running at present! 2. Flottille, from Sept. '39. I'm on my 3rd patrol right now (Holiday season -- I'm giving the Tommies a break on Christmas). Total tonnage puts me in the #1 spot. But Prien still gets all the attention because of his Scapa stunt! Bah!

I have survived the stock campaign with great ease many times, but GWX... so far my best on 100% realism was:

1st Flotilla
U-90

Kaptlt. Jon Wintergarten

Awards:
Knights cross with Golden Oak Leaves Swords and Diamonds
German Cross
Iron cross, first class
Iron cross, Second class
U-Boat war badge
U-boat front clasp

Span of career:
September 1, 1939 - October 14, 1943

Fate:
After evading nearly three hours of depth charge and hedge hog attacks the boat was damaged too seriously and the crew scuttled the U-boat in grid CG72.

Sinkings:
86 merchants and 23 warships, including the U.S.S. Prince William for a career total of 728,968 tons. U-90 also claimed one aircraft shot down.

My present career, GWX 74% realism (I keep map updates, weapons officer and outside view for screenies) I play DID --So far, 17 patrols. Started Sept 39 it is now May 1942.

Got severely mauled on three patrols. The odds of making it to the end are slim.

My best carrer is in progress right now.I've played the stock game and made it somewhere to November 41,then I reinstalled the system and thought I'll start the new one,but due to the lack of time - did not.App.year later in the winter (that's what I say - SH is an ideal winter season game) I've installed SH3 again and discovered spectacular GWX.....and I have more time as well.So now I'm in November 1940 on my 7th patrol, which is my first patrol from Lorient, which I was transfered from Wilhelmshaven by BDU to.

WoW!! That close to homeport and your luck ran out. Amazing!

Luck and realism plays a big part for sure. I started a few careers in 43 and 44 and just about all of them ended after an aircraft attack. I started this career at 74% with manual targeting "off" so that does make it easier trying to shake and bake a destroyer.

My next career will be manual targeting so I assume my tonnage figures will be more realistic and not as bloated as they are now. Thus far, 23 ships total. 14 merchants and 9 warships. Survived one nasty air attack though...got lucky!

GWX definitely is not kind to drunken Kaleuns.

GoldenRivet what a game! Three hours of DC's? Holy smokes!!!

It also depends a lot on your Flotilla/patrol areas/U-Boot. The Mediterranean is certainly no Kindergarten, while the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean doesn't put that much pressure on you until a bit later (1943):hmm:

U-123 (IXB) made it to spring of 1944, but was sunk off the South African coast. Damn, was I pissed LOL

I do tend to take more risks as my careers go on. I think it's because you have survived this long, nothing can hurt me! Boom, you're dead

U-123 was lost with all hands though after half a day of depthcharging. No unlucky encounter with airplanes fortunately, but I do get jumped from time to time.

Just over a million tons including 6 battleships; (3(!) Nelsons, 1 Revenge, the KGV and The Mighy Hood!), 2 fleet carriers, a few liners (altough the huge Cunnard liner is a missing trohpy, so far). Been playing from day one until the time USA entered the war so far. Also saved Bismarck in the same carrer. Knights cross with oaks, swords and diamonds. All with my good old U-51 IXB.

It kind of feels like the Royal Navy would be sitting in port by now, but somehow we're starting to loose the war. Probobly Goerings fault.

On stock SH3 my best career is from sep 39 to aug 42, never got any further as it got TOO tough - too much air/naval cover

I have noticed the longer a carrer is, I tend to get more sloppy and take more risk. Anyone esle noticed this?
