Just wondering, why are some parts like the deck guns, conning tower, and the deck gun platform supports shiny?

thats an AO-map limitation, Black is a shadow and white means reflect. the shiny parts are white in the AO-map

if you darken those parts a bit on the Narwhal.O01 file it gets less shiny. The original AO map I made from 3ds is already light gray to dark gray as opposed to black and white, so as to limit that effect.

@sledge : post a picture of the flipped face ? if you mean the torpedo tube doors : I didn't do a new AO map there yet..

I also need animating the doors, I guet lost in all those numbers..

the rear outer doors might've to disappear toatlly if they are like that other sub I posted in here someplace : just one set of round doors.

I guess you don't know the Captain. If we are not sinking ships we are painting, polishing, mopping and washing windows. (although I haven't been able to find the windows yet)

Well, AFAIK, the textures are 85% done, I fixed some issues (the hull rivets stopping at the bow and stern) and I made a darker texture. And doing a bit of studying, they never did use a REALLY dark blue

problem is, this darker texture is so dark it almost blots out the details on the texture itself. But I also reduced the amount of above waterline rust, to the point where she looks like she's been repainted, but she's been in the water a while.

EDIT: okay, just read the Ship Camouflage database and discovered that the Narwhal Class carried the Measure 9 (all black) scheme from 41-45.

Measure 9 painted sub :

Quote:
Vertical Surfaces:

Paint entire submarine above the waterline black, formula 82. The painting shall be carried over all parts which are visible for the air including the numbers, capstan and running light boards and bridge rails. The radio insulators shall be dark. The shall be no boot topping. The underbody shall be painted with the current issues of bottom antifouling paints.

Horizontal Surfaces:

All horizontal surfaces except wood decks shall be painted Dark Gray 5-D. The systems differ only in the painting of the vertical surfaces. In case of doubt, as on sloping surfaces, use Dark Gray 5-D.

Glass windows shall be covered or removed, especially during the day in sunny weather, and at night when anticipating searchlight discovery

I like the idea of All Black, but it would've looked better in blue .

as for the shininess issue try and darken the AO map, that should help.

also : wasn't a black sub more likely to be spotted in the clear waters of the pacific, a bit like the Med, than a blue one ?

well, the mindset was the darker the boat, the harder it is to see on the surface at night. of course, only on the darkest of the moonless nights was the boat invisible, so they soon discovered that a lighter gray boat was harder to spot on the water at night.
for some odd reason though, they did not implement these changes on the Narwhal and Nautilus. better for me, the mastah paintah!

and I don't have an issue with the shininess.

also, I tried blue, and the proper shades were destroying the details of the texture, so that's why I decided against it.

I moved all the nodes (water running, etc even included 3 on the upper gun deck, you will only see them run when you are in a storm or surfacing, but it looks a lot better) so I beg of you keltos, next .dat I send to you, please take note of the nodes' placement

I included the .dat I had from v 1.2.3, to give you the node placements as well, not the newest newest one, but the second newest one

What do you think of the new textures? I know T02 is really dark, but I think thats just my monitor

I just tested the latest version and it looks much better, but there is some rework need in the ... (You guessed it, didn't you? ) gun platform

The new pillars you have added look fine in the central part of it, but below the circular part of the platform they are still parallel. Instead, they should align circularly, like this:

Oh, and another thing that needs correcting -this is just a textures thing- is the colour of the platform and the deck below it. They should be flat black, not wooden (Like in all other subs in the game with the MS9 paint scheme). This would also improve a lot the look of the pillars you have added to support the gun platform, as the light brown used currently for the wood is too clear and unrealistic.

I looked at different picture posted here on the thread and the struts are parallel all the way from what I saw.
