Leetspeak predates Halo by quite a bit. In fact, I have noticed a significant decrease in its usage since the time of Halo's release.

BTW, it's spelled 'n00b', n00b.

True. But it's not used exclusively by Halo players. It's proper term is '1337 sp33k'. And it is a bit douchey.
