I'd love to hear about what goes on inside a modern sub, what your duties are, etc. Is it nuclear? How long do you stay on patrol? I guess I could find out about that online, but I'm lazy.

Unfortunately I cannot say too much about what happens on a modern day nuclear attack submarine for obvious reasons, but i will say this:-

Quite a few submariners now have laptops and when "off watch" whilst at sea on patrol can be found playing Sub Command, SH3, Dangerous Waters, Fleet Command etc.

Every submarine I have served on has had a copy of Das Boot, Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide in the mess dvd locker.

I went to Brest on HMS Tireless a few years ago and stood in the same submarine penns that I depart from on SH3.

I am also a planesman (drive the boat) whilst at sea.

Modern day submarines are not as big as they are on holywood screens, ie you can not go jogging around the boat like Denzel Washington did in "Crimson Tide".

The best things about being at sea on a submarine are:-

1.You dont need any money.
2.Doesnt matter if its raining all day or all weekend.
3.No sea sickness.
4.You can play on your laptop as much as you want without the wife moaning.
5.You can learn how to use sonar etc without having to download a 200 page pdf.

The downsides to being a submarine when you get home from patrol are:-

1.The wife makes you shave everyday
2.You forget you're home and que outside the kitchen for your scran
3.You shout at the wife for using the dishwasher in patrol quiet state
4.You tell the kids off for using too much water at persicope depth
5.You start "hot bunking" with your wife

I hope this gives you a bit of an idea anyway

A short joke for you:-

Title: The Submariner's Watch
A Submariner walks into a bar and takes a seat next to a very attractive woman. He gives her a quick glance then casually looks at his watch for a moment.

The woman notices this and asks, "Is your date running late?"

"No," he replies, "I just got this state-of-the-art watch and I was just testing it.

The intrigued woman says, "A state-of-the-art watch? What's so special about it?"

The Submariner explains, "It uses alpha waves to talk to me telepathically."

The lady says, "What's it telling you now?"

"Well, it says you're not wearing any panties...."

"The woman giggles and replies, "Well it must be broken because I am wearing panties!"

The Submariner smirks, taps his watch and says, "Damn thing's an hour fast."

Welcome. I can only imagine playing SHIII at 200 meters. Talk about immersion.
